Also with regards to accidents like a stray bullet killing someone, that still doesn't absolve you of liability. You can still get sued for negligence, even if it wasn't your fault. And then, depending on your department, you can easily get punished for costing the department money.

My friend just got off a 6 month, unpaid suspension for ticketing a mayors aide. He wasn't rude and he wasn't unprofessional. They said when she identified herself as an aide, he should have stopped writing then and there. She sued and filed a complaint and won the lawsuit. Cost the city $20,000. Cost him $25,000 and benefits.

They can be, which is why he won the $20,000 lawsuit. That it didn't cover the cost of what he lost sends the message that you shouldn't, though.

Sorry, they cannot be ticketed is the point of the story. Forgot to mention she sued the city for a bad ticket and won $20,000. Sorry if that confused anyone, but it's a standing GO that you can't ticket the mayor or his staff. My friend ticketed her for reckless driving, which is arrestable, and driving an unauthorized vehicle (a police package black Tahoe). She sued the city and won, and he was punished for our GO that if you are the subject of civil litigation as a government employee, you'll be suspended without pay.

That reminds me of when I told friends in Europe about PBA cards and the different things you get from having family in the FBI, police, etc lol

"you're telling me you do a crime, show them a card that means you know someone important, and they let you go? and everyone knows about this?"

Most of police work is. That's the side you don't see a lot. The levels of reprimand and punishment you endure is pretty bad. I got reprimanded running in to a burning house once. Dragged someone out and saved their life. But, because it wasn't in my best interests because I'm not trained to do such an act, I got a letter of commendation (one step below nomination for a lifesaving achievement, which comes with a bonus) and I got reprimanded at the same time, which made me ineligible for promotion or a raise for a minimum of three years.

I don't honor them, to be honest. It's not supposed to be a "get out of jail free card". If you're actual Law Enforcement, I may let minor violations slide. But I have arrested police officers, so I'm not going to let a family member slide when I don't let an officer slide.

I can maybe understand checking bank accounts if and when you are involved in anything drug related to make sure you aren't stealing evidence and cashing it out. Credit checks though? Why? Looking for stress indicators or something?

What in the actual fuck is this mayor's aide thing? Is this some sort of Lethal Weapon 2 alternate ending where Danny Glover gets fired instead of shooting the diplomat with his immunity? How the fuck did this lawsuit even make it past legal review?

edit: after thinking about it more, the bank account monitoring could be a really good tool for discouraging any thoughts of pocketing any kind of property or evidence and trying to cash it out. I have lots of cash all the time because my wife buys and sells stuff on CL. None of that touches our bank account unless we need it to pay bills or something. Still pretty easy for us to move money with little to no accountability for it.

Unusual credit checks from companies, sudden increases in activity on your credit reports, and purchases that don't fit your income can be a sign of under the table corruption. Everyone does a credit check nowadays, from that Gamestop Rewards card to the pharmaceutical company that provides you medication. Most people who are involved in corruption are too stupid to launder money properly and like to go out purchasing everything they can.

If you're tied to the system (some 100,000,000 American's are), then your credit isn't private and is ran hundreds of times a day looking for stuff like that.

Some brass in cities enjoy privileges like this, so it's not terribly uncommon. It's just like being a diplomat in those cases. Obviously, egregious stuff the Mayor can't protect you from can render your immunity useless. In this case, it was clear to us the Aide was important to the mayor, so he didn't give a shit who was hung to protect the office. It's really nothing so egregious, but understand that a lot of politicians and political leaders have this same type of immunity.

You're one of the few who don't. They're no get out of jail free cards, but they will get you pretty fucking far for stuff like traffic violations, or other minor crimes. My cousin is a cop, and her brother used to have a bunch of stories of drinking on the beach or something (he was 18-19 at the time), and all he does is mention who his sister is, and they quickly change from arresting them to "clean this up, okay?".

This is usually how it goes. But man, what the hell? How do you not recognize your neighbor of a year? Hopefully there will be a nice apology from this.

It's hard to get to know your neighbors from the confines of your basement.

Also on the credit checks for police officers, another thing they look for is severe debt. If you are in way over your head, they feel you may be easily bribed.
