Worst part is, in person, they'd act so much differently towards each other.

I'm waiting for the argument of who's stronger: Vallisk's dad or MF's dad.

This is true, it'd be hard to yell at someone who's sucking my dick.

Imagine if valisk and MF teamed up like tango and cash! Valisk can shoot dogs while MF maces and zip ties the owner.

Nah. I'm like the old immortal dude in Underworld. I let my sons run wild, wreaking havoc on the human race. If pressed, I might lock one in a cell for a few hundred years.

Stuff like that article fucks with a lot of people. It makes for bad PR and even worse, makes the entire department look bad. And it makes cops all over the country look bad. Law Enforcement in general is one of the most scrutinized professions in the world. We're supposed to be the peace keepers, the emotional backup, and the light that penetrates the darkness. Since my days on patrol, i've had to wear many different hats. I had to be a Cop, an electrician, a firefighter, a father, a son (and I don't even know my parents), a plumber, a groundskeeper, a doctor, a lawyer, a financial adviser, and a mechanic. People depend on the police because the job goes much deeper than just plain "Customer Service". Sometimes, you just gotta go above and beyond. It's a calling, not a right. Some people just don't deserve to put on that badge. Lack of discipline, lack of accountability, and lack of good old fashioned common sense are what eventually weed out the bad. Gotta have a good mind to be a cop. Saddens me to no end to hear shit like this.

It really makes me happy knowing you are a police officer and seeing you post this. It is an incredibly difficult job and I have an immense amount of respect for the people who can do the job but maintain a high level of compassion for the general public and customer service.

I think on a more personal level that too many police officers like to treat the vanilla joe-blow citizen like they're shit or trash. The hardest people to deal with by far in any field of Customer Service is the elderly. A lot of the folks I interact with are elderly, lonely, have no one else to turn to, some of them are batshit crazy, and usually just want to talk. When I was in patrol I would always do welfare checks on the elderly in the neighborhoods and more than once I was able to help someone out.

One woman I fixed the radiator at her house in the dead of winter right in the middle of the hood. It was cold as shit and no one would come out to help this poor lady (she must've been in the 80's). All she really needed was for someone to replace the pressure valve on her radiator and I did it with my own money out my pocket. She looked at me later once it started to heat up and said "You're the nicest white boy I've ever met. I'm glad there are some good people out there." I think that's what really did it for me. I was a rookie, probably not more than 6 months out of the academy and about a year out of Afghanistan after seeing some of the bloodiest fighting and violence ever, and this little old lady helped me to realize what kind of cop I wanted to be.

People just want to be treated like people. Even violent criminals who just robbed or shot someone just want to be treated like a human being. I'll never forget my partner at the time responded with me to a shooting in an apartment complex. We grabbed the guy and my partner tried to be tough guy and the subject spit on him and said "Fucking white piece of shit you ain't nothin' but a fuckin' rookie. Take your ass away before I get mad." So I went up to him, talked to him, talked about his family, about life, and after he said "Man you're cool. I wish I could be something but now i'm getting locked up." I ended up testifying at his trial for competency hearing and he got off with a reduced sentence, house arrest for a year and mandatory probation/drug screenings for 6 years and now he's working in construction making a cool $60,000 a year. Got a nice place up in Arlington Virginia and moved his whole family out the hood.

Moral of the story is treat people the way you want to be treated under similar circumstances. Regardless of what your deal is, everyone has a story to tell and if you just listen, you can learn a lot and save yourself a whole mess of problems.

It's nothing new, mate. For the most part, the people seeking any form of authority are the worst people to exert it. It's true in politics, it's true in armed forces, it's true in business, it's true in the police.

There are exceptions (and you yourself seem to be one), of course, but that's just what they are: exceptions.

There's something to be said for training, preparedness, and continuing education. Anyone in the military can tell you that for a particular job or scenario information and procedure are drilled into their heads a million billion times. This has nothing to do with the vague Peter Parker-ish philosophical meandering about power and responsibility. It's about ensuring uniformity in procedure and interaction in the community from the top down.

We have troops in 3rd world war zones that behave better than police on our own soil. There's a reason for that and it has nothing to do with perceptions or pursuits of power.

Now how the hell am I supposed to continue with my jaded view of police officers when you write something like that? I mean I know there are good cops out there and I have had my share of good experiences, but the 4 or 5 bad experiences are supposed to trump that and make me an angry "fuck the cops" kind of person...Then you go and reattach the human face to the officer and I can't maintain the facade when you do that...

You're totally fucking with my brain here.

Makes me wonder if he wears the PLD gear in his sig while on patrol.

Good to see a cop who gives a shit for a change though.

He is our resident Knight in Shining Armor now.

Also Neph, you could just be a paramedic or firefighter and volunteer your extra time in old folks communities. You won't get beat down mentally near as much, and you still get to help people all the time. Career Change GO!

    Someone light the Kuya signal!

There are good cops and bad cops, just like there are good soldiers and bad soldiers.

There are plenty of cops out there who do give a shit. The problem is, unless it's saving someones life in a major disaster that gets news coverage, you never hear about it. Bad news sells.
