When I see you coming in this thread with your bullshit, it makes me lump you with them. The problem with our country is how our police have always been used. Ask a random citizen in the us how seeing a cop makes them feel, then ask a random UK or German or French or Swede. Seeing the police shouldn't make you feel uneasy or nervous, and it only does because they have been used as a revenue stream to harass normal citizens for so long people just dislike them now.

The fact that our cops have the ability to stop/search people randomly is a big effect on being able to take advantage of that power. I personally don't think that police should be able to search anyone without an amount of probable cause on par with most of Europe.
Man... If you were this obsessed with me, how come you don't ever pay attention to anything I say?

You know, whenever I see someone try to make the Europe argument, it makes me wonder if people really know what it's like to be stopped by the Polizei in Germany, or know how to make reasonable comparisons to violent crime in said European countries with the violent crime rate in America?

Bad news: the US has a pretty violent past, with a pretty violent crime rate currently, and will always be a violent place to live. You want to know why European countries have the ability to stick unarmed "professional" bobbies on the street? Because they trample all over individual freedoms to control their respective populations. Very few countries allow you to possess a firearm. Very few countries have the violent crime rate of the US. That's not a hard concept to grasp, and I suggest people read about it before trying to make the argument.

Additionally, read up on why the UK is about to lose 1/3 of its police force. Bad wages, dangerous threats from terrorists, bad morale, lack of individual support, and lack of weapons to defend themselves are causing their so called "perfect" police force to quit in droves.

I got more bad news for you: you don't need probable cause to search someone in most of Europe. There's a thing called the U.S. Constitution, specifically the Fourth Amendment that protects citizens from unreasonable searches and seizures by the government. There's only one country with that provision, and it's not a European country. Police officer in places like Germany don't need reasonable suspicion to stop you on the street, meaning they need exactly nothing to stop and spot check you. Disrespecting a German police officer is also a great way to get thrown in to jail. In the US, I have to have RS to stop you, and I can't just because you call me a pig or whatever.

But that's cool, go ahead and believe the fairy tale that US cops are the worst in the world. Try living somewhere else like China and try to pull some of your BS there. Hope that works out for you.

    Yet again, cops prove their immunity;

where do you get your 1/3 number?

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-29802602

The Police Federation, which represents police officers up to the rank of chief inspector in England and Wales, said: "Our survey suggests 15% are planning to leave the service.
    and the reason?
"All parts of the public sector are reporting low morale among staff. There is concern at low pay increases, lack of promotion opportunities and the likely impact of further budget cuts with fewer staff to do more work.

    and the reason?
So essentially what I said. I have friends who are police officers in the UK who say it's a lot worse than it's being reported.

I was stationed in Germany for a year. Off installation time was the best in the world. The people were so friendly and the food was amazing. For a US quarter, I could get a pint and a dollar more could get some of the most delicious German food ever, and this is at a small mom and pop diner or café on the street corner.

The moment you think all is well, you suddenly see people quiet down, move to the side, bow out of conversations, and freeze up when the Polizei came around. They wouldn't say anything to anyone. Usually, they just drove by. Sometimes, they would walk by. Randomly, they stopped and looked people up and down, then kept walking, as if they were seizing you up to see if they could take you. They command respect, not because they're brutal oppressors, but because of the way they carry themselves at all times. Professional, squared away, and will seriously fuck you up at the drop of a hat.

Witnessed it firsthand when two stopped a drunk guy who was walking on the street. "What are you doing?" one of them said. The drunk guy said something, then the other came up behind him, elbowed him in the back of the head and knocked him flat on his chest. They turned him over and just started screaming at him. They didn't hit him, just screamed at him at the top of their lungs. Everyone just ignored it. No one pulled out a cell phone to record (it's illegal there to record the police), no one tried to interfere with them, or were outraged that this guy who was just simply drunk got brutalized.

People think it's so bad here in America, and use a couple dozen examples to "prove" oppression or use it to make the argument of a "police state", when they have no clue what the function of the police in other countries is like. Grass isn't always greener, boys and girls. At least you have the ability to freely talk about how " oppressed" you are. Some people in some countries can't even do that, as the government has put in place restrictions and laws that make such dialogue a crime.

Germany also uses the honor system for things like public transit (successfully). There's a very low probability of getting caught, but if you do get caught they will rape you with fines. Even if you don't get caught by police, they will rape you with glares.

The German police also have a dark secret of past incidents, but it's okay because you saw on The Wire how it's done, so cops must be that way!

Anywho, the Sergeant who was on the aforementioned video resigned his position, which allowed the Saratoga Sheriff's Office to file Official Misconduct and Harassment charges against him.

You still in here white knighting and blabbing about how other countries aren't as "violent" as us? btw, I know we have laws to protect us from search and seizure, I was commenting on how much that is getting violated lately. The police are increasingly overstepping their bounds. If you get so worked up in this thread, and you are on reddit so much more now as you claim, how do you avoid the /badcopnodonut sub? lol

I don't avoid open discussion, even on the cop block forums. There's plenty of people on that forum who don't spew shit from the feeding tube. Using words like "increasingly overstepping bounds" is assumption based scrutiny at it's best, and even some of the guys from the BCND forum will call out their own subscribers who play in to that line of thinking.

"Well, Darren Wilson killed an unarmed black kid! All cops kill unarmed black kids!" Assume for .25 seconds that not only is Ferguson Missouri a good distance away from where I PSA, but my department is very different demographically and has a very different mindset, though our city population indexes are still very similar demographically to Ferguson (about 60/30/10 black/white/other). We still get blamed for racism and people still claim bullshit stats for our department that we're trying to destroy the black man.

The point is, everyone is quick to judge and jump to conclusions without actually reading or finding context to the bullshit they spew. What you call "white knighting" is me looking at all sides of the equation before I make a judgement call. So sorry that I don't immediately rush to put on my tinfoil helmet and grab my pitchfork at the first sign of trouble and would rather look at situations objectively. And, sorry I don't believe every person who claims they're a victim or they're being mistreated by a police officer. People suck, and you should know this if you're really a military guy.

People accuse me of being a follower, a government fascist, a lemming, a Nazi, whatever you can think of. I'm not offended; in fact, the only thing I'm offended by is that all those names I'm called all have the same common weakness in that they are examples of close-minded people, except people forget it is my job to be open-minded and objective. So in other words, piss off with your flawed ass logic and make a legitimate argument rather than trying to bark up my tree and provoke me.

people think I'm fucking joking when I tell them cops around here pull horseshit like this

tl;dr: cop in a donald duck costume takes a step in and out of the crosswalk and tickets you if you drive through while he's technically still in it, like the universe's most absurdly fucktarded game of red light green light

It's not a bad job. The people make it harder than what it needs to be.

Pay isn't bad. There's opportunities to move up in the chain, so it's an evolving job just like most. It's definitely one of the lousiest paying jobs in the industry, but if your department can get overtime, you can live comfortably (we can't get overtime, so we're base salary without merit increases).

Expectations are pretty strenuous. There's reality, and there's what people think we should be doing. Everyone wants everything, without thinking logistically about what the consequences of these expectations are. For example, body cameras. We are getting ready to deploy some 3000 body cameras in to the field in the upcoming fiscal. We already have a 2.5 million dollar grant that has been spent on infrastructure to support the program, with another $20 million on reserve for purchase and maintaining the program. There's already been upwards of 2,000 FOIA requests for footage, and we haven't even rolled the system out yet. It costs roughly $500 per request to process. It's going to get even more dicey once we have requests for access to camera data for every officer on patrol 24/7.

Training isn't exceptionally awesome, but there's lot's of opportunities for good training. Especially with other departments like the FBI and CIA, if that's what you want to do.

Scrutiny? Well, you'll always have that. You can't sneeze in policing nowadays without someone asking you why you sneezed in to your hand instead of your elbow like it was explained during Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens training. Everyone is an expert on public safety, and everyone has a quick and easy solution to every problem known to man, and can't explain their way out of a wet paper bag to save their own life, let alone run a city department of 3000+ sworn officers policing an area that used to be Murder Capitol for years, with some 30 million visitors a day.

Responsibility is ever changing, just like with expectations. There's always something new being thrown on to your lap. Like with the marijuana enforcement now that it's decriminalized in DC. The expectation is to forget about enforcement, which is easy. The responsibility of that expectation, though, is to be ready to issue a citation or arrest someone for public consumption, which conflicts your job because of legal loopholes and jargon in the law that forces the officer to make snap decisions that can get you fired.

Public perception is what it is. The loudest voices in the room are the ones trying to make a statement. The negative and bad ones are the ones who demand and garner the most attention, and those are the ones who need to be addressed. Widespread misconduct in my department is very rare at best. It also depends on the district, but generally, most of the officers in my department are pretty cool and know what's on the line. As far as that goes, we (as a collective) know what the mission is: to save lives. That's what we're here for. Our overall goal is to go home safe at night, but primarily, we're here to do a job. Part of that job is to protect and serve to the best of our ability. People don't like it? Tough. Go live somewhere else.

Overall, being a police officer requires you to be a pretty unique and thick skinned person. It's thankless, tiresome, requires a full-time investment in to your life, and requires you to have no social life or any life outside the job. If you're ready to give up those aspects, it's the perfect job for you. Some of us work so much, we practically live at our agency. Once you have kids and get married, you tend to resent the job more because you rarely spend time doing the things normal people do. You miss birthday parties, school PTA sessions, dance recitals, sporting events, weddings, funerals, holidays (I have worked every Thanksgiving and Christmas since I joined, and I will not have off until my next senior rotation partner quits, retires, or moves to a different section), all of this is put on hold for your job. I rarely slept a night when finishing my degree, and hardly have a weekend off (my days off are Tuesdays and Wednesdays permanently until my two senior rotation partners quit, retire, or move to different sections).

It is the job I signed up for, though. I shouldn't bitch too much about it, but I am a human being, so I believe that qualifies me to be able to gripe about it and complain about it every so often.
