It's appalling to me that the more reasonable decision to make if you want to stop someone you know from committing suicide is to try talking them down yourself instead of involving trained professionals. The professionals aren't there to amicably deescalate and resolve the situation; they're there to prevent the person from killing themselves, even if that means they have to do the killing for them.

Unfortunately, the reasonable decision you said is what the norm and expectation is nowadays. It's not like it is in the movies where a negotiator or a psychologist is within minutes of the scene to come out and negotiate with the Emotionally Disturbed Person. I think the numbers where trained "professionals" like that only respond to maybe 5% of all related calls. You have to think the profession is only so big, and America is a pretty massive place. Maybe one or two agencies in an entire state might be able to afford a qualified Hostage Negotiator or someone who can deal with an EDP.

Law Enforcement Officers are trained to deal with situations like that. We get so much training, it's not even funny. Thousands of hours of training and dealing with EDP and suicidal people; it's almost an overload of training. In most instances, quick thinking and quick action saves way more lives than sitting back and waiting for someone to come and resolve the situation. For the thousands of calls for EDP, the only ones you hear about are the failures or the ones where the EDP is killed by Law Enforcement. EDP's are still dangerous. If they present a threat to others, they are killed just like normal Joe Blow on the street, regardless of the deescalation tactics being employed.

And to further drive that point home, you'd be insane to think every negotiation goes well. There's literally hundreds of examples of failed negotiations that result in the EDP killing themselves, someone else, or being killed because negotiations collapse. It's not a magical cure-all and does not mean that person will be magically "saved".
