So what exactly is ridiculous about this outside of the fact a cop was killed in cold blood, and the suspect is in custody, or are you just pulling your troll card?

Since this is in the area I decided to look closer into it. The problem with this incident is that the radio in the car was so loud that you can't hear what the officer is telling Dontrell, which matters greatly because if he is telling Dontrell to get on the ground and instead Dontrell reaches into his pocket for something, of course the officer is going to respond accordingly. Turns out the "black object" was nothing more than a cell phone, but the officer gets the benefit of the doubt if he's telling the truth. Tragic either way though, since he survived but is paralyzed from the waist down.

Why reach into your pants period when an officer is obviously anxious to pull you over and question you? I don't know the answer to that, but Dontrell has a history of making terrible decisions according to his priors.

If you read the article, it wasn't for "no reason". It was the wrong reason, but he didn't decide to jump out of his car and kill another darkie.

You can't shoot someone for reaching into their pockets.

We can make all the assumptions we want, but from the time the cop left the car until the time Dontrell came back in the frame from behind the vehicle something happened. Why did he try to run away? Why did he try to take anything out of his pocket? Those are important questions to ask. I'm not saying the cop was right to shoot him, because hindsight is 20/20, but look where being in the right got Dontrell.

Would you run if someone ran toward you aggressively screaming at you while going for his gun? I would fucking panic and run just like the vast majority of people would. Especially if I were black in a society where poor people are raised to fear police.

That is the issue. The aggressive, high tension response from police who clearly have no intention of deescalating the situation are the ones we see over and over getting posted in another "look what the police did" article.

Uh, no. I'd put my hands up and surrender (if said person was a cop), and wait until I was sitting in a car or cuffs before becoming belligerent and asking why they'd come after an innocent man. You know, the correct way to deal with police if they have the wrong guy.

People need to learn how to deal with law enforcement, and how to let them do their research and investigation until they know you're both not a threat or the person they're looking for. Cooperation goes a long way to deescalation, especially if the cop has a legitimate reason for stopping you and questioning you. Suddenly reaching into your pants to grab a small black item is not the right thing to do, I'm sorry.

That said, never consent to a search lol, and most definitely don't suddenly and very quickly reach into your pants for a small black object. I can't believe this isn't common sense.

He's not wrong lol. Just shut up and comply with the cops. If they do something fucked up, take care of it after the fact.

...or even something as simple as being kept overnight in a holding cell (potentially with other people) could end with you in the hospital or out of work depending on your situation and luck.

I know Baltimore broke off into it's own thread and all, but good god really?

And the cops in Baltimore got charged didn't they?

There's a reason this cop wasn't, and a reason why black leadership hasn't descended upon Palm Beach with righteous fury like they did in Baltimore and Ferguson. It's unfortunate because if Dontrell had only ran away he'd probably still have working legs; but because the officer perceived a threat after he tried reaching into his pants then running away, he was shot.

I'm as far from a police supporter as you can get but I disagree. if a cop asks you to put your hands up and you reach into your pockets, you're gonna get shot.

that said, unncessarily aggressive police behavior instantly escalates these situations. training on behavioral management would go a long way toward fixing some of the problems Americans have with cops these days. basically cops need to learn to chill the fuck out and reserve aggressive behavior for necessary situations.

and as long as I'm here, there's this:

    http://www.vocativ.com/culture/socie...yed-mlk-rally/

that video is a perfect example of unnecessary police escalation. what the fuck, lady? people are casually milling by, mostly keeping their distance, so you pepper spray them? she's the only one screaming, being violent, or escalating at all.
