I don't think he should have been arrested, but without interrogating him myself (just looking at the evidence, what his clock looked like, etc) I would have to side with Dawkins. I find it hard to believe it wasn't intentionally made to look like some sort of IED.

I used to do shit like that all the time as a kid. The fact that he is profiting so much from this debacle is pretty annoying. All the stuff microsoft sent him, the invitations to MIT, the white house, Facebook etc. There are so many kids out there who do the same stuff that he does that don't get any attention for it.

Though he could have gotten a kit that required some programming to work. Hard to tell how much effort he put into it just from the photos.

Also this doesn't negate the fact that the school acted stupidly and the police should never have arrested him.

There will always be kids who know how to do zany shit and get no press. Like that Sierra Leone kid Kelvin Doe who builds radio transmitters, batteries and his own personal radio station. I say good for him, chance of a lifetime for him, however the reason.

What would the battle plan be if this person noticed the officer coming up behind him? If he started firing rounds, the officers wouldn't be able to shoot back at him due to cross fire.

What happens if he gets knocked out of the chair, but still has the gun in his hands? Still fully able to fire while on the ground as well.

I never said that, but also JMC essentially summed it up. Having an officer come up from behind puts the other officers at harms way as they will not be able to return fire.
