Police officers provide no real value to society that can't be instantly replaced. When a cop dies, nothing of value is lost, their role can easily be filled in a month with a new recruit to do the same exact thing. You aren't a profession that continues to master a trade that society can't instantly replace. An electrician, a butcher, a plumber, a chemist - those are examples of professions in society that are not expendable. They take time to train and master their craft. If we lost any or all of these in a society it the impact would be felt.
If all of the police in a city were removed or died, you could easily call in the National Guard or even Army reservists to fill their role for a month while new recruits are trained and put on the ground. Police don't grow into any greater position that further benefits society. You are drawn from the population as mostly poorly educated and without ambition to act as security and for show of strength on the idea that that is what prevents crime. You rarely prevent crime through force of action or expertise. Sorry to smash your delusions of heroism and grandeur all over the place but dems da fax, Jack. You're a drain on society, you're very easily replaced, and while some of you, sometimes, may do heroic sounding acts - you're nothing more than basic trained grunts on the ground to provide an illusion of order. When you die, the very next die no one in society notices the impact of your absence. Another pair of boots are on the ground and time goes on.
