So there's two threads of thought here.

First, is the Sodom, gay, anal sex thing. This is the common way of using the word, and what most everyone thinks of. Such examples as Churchill's "Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash".

Second, is seeing Sodom as not strictly the gay thing explicitly in the bible, but as a general den of unacceptable sexual practices (anything not married heterosexual sex in the missionary position). This is a less common way of using the word.

The kind of people who use the word this way, have historically been able to put themselves in positions of power. As a consequence, in a number of areas it is the case that a wide variety of things "not married heterosexual sex in the missionary position" are legally crimes, that are defined by using the term... Sodomy.

The officer who shot Vonderrit Myers (Ferguson thread has the incident), Jason Flanery, has quit the force after getting in a drunk driving accident in his squad car then leaving the scene. He drove the car back to his home where fellow officers found him. He refused a breathalyzer. He was also off-duty at the time and shouldn't have been driving the said vehicle. He has not been charged.

I'm sure that he'll be charged with more than just the DUI and leaving the scene of a accident. He's been working a second job as a security guard. Under the rules for the St Louis police, officers may only use their squad car off hours to drive home and to work. Seeing as he's been using it for means beyond that will cause some extra problems.

Officer Jason Flanery was driving his patrol car after dawn on Saturday when he hit a parked car on Jamieson Avenue, near Lindenwood Park in south St. Louis, according to several sources close to the investigation. When police responded to the accident, a witness said a police car had caused the damage and fled.

Officers found the car at Flanery’s house nearby.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said Flanery refused to take a breath alcohol analysis test, so the department requested a search warrant, and returned to his house later in the day to get blood drawn.

Joyce’s 51-page report concluded that Myers fled from Flanery in the 4100 block of Shaw Boulevard about 7:30 that night. Flanery was in his police uniform, working an approved second job patrolling for a private security company.

lanery was 31 when the report was released. He was an officer in the mobile reserve unit.

Sources close to the investigation say they believe that Flanery worked Friday evening into the early morning hours Saturday, but that he was not on duty when he crashed his patrol car.

Officers are not allowed to drive their cars except to and from their shifts.
