It might be more important to have a specific situation in mind here. I mean, if someone is all, "Fuck you, pig!" and reaches behind their back, a cop is every bit as justified to react in fear for themselves. Meanwhile, if you've been around dogs enough, you can generally pick up on their body language when they're about to bite. And I'm talking more than just them growling and barking aggressively given fear can inspire just as much as a will to protect their family. As is, we've gotta remember dogs tend to top out at the intellectual level of toddlers, lack of human language aside.

So, while there are definitely some shit cops out there who shouldn't have their badges, we should at least know that antagonizing the good or bad ones likely won't end well. Otherwise, we have to have faith in things like dash cams, body cams, eyewitness/police reports, and other forms of investigation in the event things do take a tragic turn. Sympathy tends to quickly goes out the window the moment cooperation is discovered to not be there, however. If we're really going to default to lines like, "Because they're brown!" then we've gotta consider the possibility such stereotype has root somewhere, and it's not just racist law enforcement. We've got culture problems were undermining authority is basically encouraged in all the wrong ways.

The cuz they're brown stems from American culture. No one cares If 500 black / Indian / Mexican / *insert minority* die because American culture pushes that they deserve it or are criminal by default etc it's easy to pass it off. Really the only thing that makes America "care" is dead pretty blond white girls.... Not even gunned down children get the care-o-meter past 0.5.

If someone complains to my condo board that my dog is running around off her leash in the hall way, I can get fined 250$. I think if it happens enough times, I believe they can repossess the dwelling (I'm not sure what kind of legal hurdles that entails though). If that can happen to someone who OWNS a condo, how much protection does someone whos renting an apartment have in regards to pets running around in the hallway without a leash? I'd say next to none.

I'm NOT defending the actions of the cops there, but I'm calling out an owner who couldnt control their pet as an owner who couldnt control their pet.

and now to lighten the mood:

We have ingrained stereotypes about people. Some not so nice. We also tend to dehumanize outside groups to puff up our own. Most people see dogs are generally positive so the loss is seen as painful. Dogs transcend our cultural boundaries so white/black/brown/asn, you can feel that owners loss.

Consequently, if someone takes a flamethrower to a large colony of insects, the response is generally not 'omg cruelty!'

I live an apartment and have a 70lbs puppy that never even pokes his head out the door because he knows better.

I think the cop is in the wrong obviously, but yes, it's ridiculous to act as though the owner couldn't have prevented the dog from running out. You just don't do that. I respect the fact that some people are afraid of dogs. If I let him out without a leash and someone freaks out and kicks him because they're terrified, that's on me. Same thing here. Both parties are at fault.

yes but one party's fault led to a friendly pupperino on the loose the other's led to the gratuitously unnecessary discharge of a firearm in a residential area and a murdered pet

moreover one is a trained professional being paid to act the part

    So much this.

Someone's punishment for a dog getting loose in the hallway shouldn't be a dead dog. Jesus. Do we really need to live a completely perfect life in order for cops to not shoot us or loved ones? Any misstep and the cops don't take responsibility? Really?

Yes? Do you not consciously monitor your actions in situations(traffic stop, court house, airport, etc.)? No sound on the video, but 99% sure they announced when they knocked on the door that they were police, plus she has a peep hole and I don't know anyone who opens the door without looking. Is there any reason to let your dog out of the door first other than intimidation?

no i think the more likely scenario is the pantsless law-abiding citizen responding to a door knock at 1:47 AM decided intimidating the police with her ferocious attack dog was the optimal strategy

...i don't look through a peephole when opening the door, because its usually a deliveryman. and a lot of apartment walls and doors are pretty thick. it's quite possible they heard the doorbell ringing but not the shout, if the policeman did shout. and since they certainly weren't expecting a policeman to ring the door for a suspected crime, and might not have even noticed it was a policeman, they might not have even thought about restraining the dog at all.if they had friends come over a lot, or were expecting friends, they might not have even restrained the dog because they thought it was someone the dog knew and that knew the dog.

there's a boatload of reasons why they might not have restrained the dog, and not many that deserved the poor thing getting killed. i mean, how often do law abiding citizens expect to even SEE a police officer talk to them? there's no class on "how to act properly around a policeman so they don't feel threatened". most people aren't even trained or have any experience on how to handle a potential crisis. the burden of acting respectable may fall on the citizen and policeman both, but it's the policemans job to act calm and professional. a hair-triggered policeman serves no one justice.

Why does the cops misstep not matter? This is what a police state is. People and pets should not die over simple mistakes. A dog in the hallway is a simple mistake. The result does not in any shape or form fit the action.

Your actions examples have zero to do with cop activity. I am not careful at a traffic stop over fear a cop will shoot me.

My cat ninjas out the door all the fucking time. Sometimes I won't see her near, and she zips out in two seconds. I don't think that she should get shot over it.

So because your 5 pound cat, that is undoubtedly more nimble and quicker than a 30 pound dog, means that the standards of animal escape be similar.

    Gotcha

So at 1:47 am, without any pants on, she's expecting company? I'd love to be her friend.
Since when do apartment complexes have doorbells directly at the entrance to the dwelling?

No one here is justifying the cops actions, no one here is defending the cops actions.

Once again, I can get fined, and possibly have my condo, THAT I OWN, repossessed the condo board if someone complains that my dog is out in the hallway off a leash. How much protection do you think someone renting an apartment will have in regards to that? Theres nothing about having a "perfect life" about not having your dog run out in the fucking hallway. What if that dog runs out and bites someone, or ANYTHING, and they press charges? If that dog bit someone, they're getting put down. If the dog scared someones kid, thats a potential civil suit over a "traumatic experience".

Its part of the responsibilities of owning a pet.

Absolutely similar. Neither should die. That's similar.

And then they shoot it? No? Not relevant. A fine DOES equal the action, death does not.

I have zero problems with someone pressing charges over a dog bite. I also don't have problems with punishment for people not getting their pets vaccines.

That doesn't mean a cop gets to shoot any dog at any time.

The punishments don't fit the crime.

You are under the crazy delusion that if any illegal action is done, no matter how minor, then the cop gets to kill. I refuse to drink that koolaid. They need some limits.

    Cool.

Except, I'm not defending the cops actions, so stop replying like my responses are in defense of the cops actions. I'm attacking the actions of an irresponsible pet owner. What are the odds that this is the one and only time her dog has escaped her dwelling with someone at the door? If she didnt think to restrain the dog before opening the door, its probably not the first time that has happened.

What is this shit about perfection anyways? Were talking about restraining a 30 pound dog from escaping a dwelling. Were not talking about open heart surgery. Were not talking about driving a vehicle. Were talking about holding a dog in a dwelling. It doesnt take a perfectionist to be able to restrain a pet from escaping a dwelling. Did you even watch the video? Because from what I saw, she made NO ATTEMPT to stop the dog from leaving the apartment.

The dog was half way out the door and was trapped because he couldnt get through, and instead of trapping the dog and grabbing it to pull him in, she instead opens the door further letting him out. What good could come from letting a pitbull out in the hallway? Even if he was a friendly dog, pitbulls dont exactly have the best of reputations.

here, edited that last bit to hopefully show you how ridiculous that argument is. and if it happened at nearly 2 am, it's quite possible the owner was, you know, woken up and not exactly in the right frame of mind to make smart judgements. you know, being groggy from sleep and all that. like i said, theres a huge amount of reasons why they might have let the dog out, and not even bad reasons for the most part. there's certainly no reasons that argue for the policeman to shoot the damn dog. there's simply no excuse for the cops action, so saying "but the owner is totally at fault too!" is a ridiculous argument to make, when the punishment doesn't even suit the (non)-crime.

    oh ok
Later, a neighbor put a blanket over Rosado, since she was in only her underwear early that morning, dancing with her dog.
stop, pls. You're a terrible devils advocate. First it was doorbells in apartments, which I've never heard of. And now you've flipflopped from her expecting pantsless company at 1:45 am to her being sound asleep.

please, go on and explain these legitimate reasons to let your dog in the hallway of an apartment complex at 1:45 am off a leash.

And your edit of my post was an absolute cesspool of horseshit. Comparing a black person to a dog...really? And you actually considered it a legitimate counterargument...lol

you've never heard of a doorbell in an apartment? wow. i've never been in an apartment without a doorbell. and i'm pointing out various possible reasons. thats not flipflopping, thats pointing out various damn reasons. maybe she's a night owl and goes to bed at 6 am. maybe she's a morning lark and was too sleepy to make a snap judgement on putting her dog on a leash. if she did just wake up, i seriously doubt she's going to even be thinking about the dog, she'd be thinking about who the fuck was waking her up at 2 am.

and my editing was because you argued that just because it was a pitbull, a breed that has a "bad reputation", somehow that justifies murdering it when it hasn't done anything to warrant self defense. just how some cops seem to be murdering people because their race has a so called "bad reputation". there's no justification for murdering a non-threat.
