No, I've never seen an apartment with a doorbell right at the entrance to the dwelling. The "doorbell" is at the entrance of the building, which uses a buzzer to grant access to the building.

looking at the video, can't tell if the police rang a doorbell, knocked, or even shouted it was the police. the way they stand there doesn't seem to indicate they were pounding and shouting though. what does look apparant is the dog slipped through the door, and the owner unsuccessfully tried to keep it out by trying to narrow the gap. (not surprising, since if you're unexpectedly greeted by police when you're not even well dressed and probably half awake, the dog sneaking through the gap is the last thing on your mind.)

i can't pin any blame on the lady here. the police caught her at a moment she was completely unprepared for visiters, shocked her even more with their unexpected appearance, then freaked out over a dog wagging its tail and giving off obvious signals of simply wanting to say hi. if i ever see a dog making motions like that i recognize it as wanting to rub against me, sit at my feet, and look up with a happy grin on its face. and quite frankly, i'm pretty intimidated by dogs, so i'm biased toward the "OMG IT'S GOING TO TRY TO KILL ME" side of things when a dog comes toward me.

policeman is clearly hair-triggered and reacting to innocuous things you encounter in normal society in a bad manner. personally i feel there needs to be a way for police to be given some sort of breaks or training to avoid precisely this kind of situation, some way of keeping them from making snap judgements with their weapons instead of their head.

Later, a neighbor put a blanket over Rosado, since she was in only her underwear early that morning, dancing with her dog.
    She wasnt "half awake"

On stupid victims who blindly open the door, why not? Why bother breaking the door down when someone will open it for you?

Most people look out to see who it is. Someone who doesn't is atypical. If I'm a burglar, I'm not going to knock on random doors until I find someone who will open it and then be like "GOTCHA!" lol. Then again, I'm not a burglar so maybe I don't really know.

Anyway for this case: If I was there investigating a crime and the first thing out of the door is a 70lb pitbull(Yes that is the weight and breed), I'd be thinking that I was about to be attacked. Same thing if an adult rushed out of the door.

Oh wow the dog was 70lbs? People forget how dangerous even a 20 lbs dog can be (first hand experience with this). This is why it's up to responsible pet ownership to prevent things like this. Just because your pet is the love of your life doesn't mean that he doesn't have the capability to cause serious injury or harm should he chose to, and in 10/10 cases a cop should choose to protect their own/human life over a canine. Sorry, not sorry. I blame this officer for sure, but I blame irresponsible pet ownership just as much.

Owning a dog is a privilege, not a right. Handle your shit before it gets handled for you.

Majority of burglaries done in the US are "cold" aka nobody is at home. Significantly less risk since occupants tend to do things like identify, call 911, make noise and attracting attention from neighbors, have guns, etc.

Wait who the heck blindly opens the door at such an indecent hour? Hell if it's me you'd be lucky if I even got up to check. Even during the day I'm looking before I open

even if it wasn't cold, and the guy wants to fuck your shit up (easier to just have some bullshit story, fake gehova's witness, etc and find a place that's empty but w/e), he's better off knocking and taking you on at the front door than going in and not knowing where you are

knocking/doorbell is flat out the best course of action no matter the circumstances I think

where's it say it's 70 lb? This dog is as big as a welcome mat.. that can't be 70 lbs. I'm not that bad at estimating weight, I would have bet money on it being no more than 50 and likely 30-40

A few articles when I searched both the owner and the officer list the weight and breed. I assume they asked the owner.

I think the cop is in the wrong obviously, but yes, it's ridiculous to act as though the owner couldn't have prevented the dog from running out. You just don't do that. I respect the fact that some people are afraid of dogs. If I let him out without a leash and someone freaks out and kicks him because they're terrified, that's on me. Same thing here. Both parties are at fault.
    This 100%.

Overzealous dog owners are horrid. There is never any blame on the owner. I have a friend who is against violence to animals, even has gone vegan. But her dog is fucking over weight. The oh my dog is cute and kind even though it just fucking jumped on me is bullshit.

    So it was a pit?

Part of being a responsible owner of a pitbull is knowing that you can't just let him/her free roam because people are flat out terrified of the breed.

To touch on the ridiculous doorbell situation; I do maintenance on no less than 7 apartment complexes with doorbells at the entrance to each individual unit.

The rest of this argument is ridiculous. You don't get to shoot a dog for walking out of an apartment any more than you get to shoot a black man for walking out of an apartment. Get the fuck off this "she should not have worn that skirt" argument. The cop fucked up and killed an animal because of his irrational fear and subsequent action. This is where the problem lies.

Before we go down the "the dog was a distraction and had to be neutralized" path, do cops shoot human distractions to neutralize them so they can focus on the dangerous suspect?

Fear of a pitbull (or any dog) that rushes out a door when knocking on a suspected domestic abuse scene is far from irrational. That being said, someone in ANY profession that knocks on doors and goes into stranger's homes on a regular basis should have a much stronger understanding of dog body language. And that goes at least twice as much for police officers.

you should really just say "any larger dog," pitbulls are not naturally violent

Not just big dogs. Even small dogs. Fear of them is different from fearing for your life. They won't kill you, but small dogs can still bite hard enough to break skin if they want.

Fear for an unknown dog running at you is always a pretty rational fear. But, like I said, significantly higher standards are expected.
