I'm sorry, professionals consciously avoid helping suicidal doctors because they might lose their job or license? Am I reading that wrong?
Edit: Or do you mean social safety nets like friends/SO's don't sufficiently support suicidal doctors because they don't think losing a job/license is as big a deal as the doctor does?
Fear of losing the ability to practice because PHPs might take it away if they feel the doctor is a danger, even if they are.
Imagine you spent 8 years and 400k getting an education, had a bad spell, and now have debt and threatened inability to pay it back.
It's a real thing. It's like people who avoid doctors because there's a stigma on mental illnesses. Doctors are no different with that. Every license renewal they have to report any changes in diagnosis, and revealing you've been diagnosed with bipolar depression, for example, might result in you losing your license.
Will it? Well, who knows. PHPs aren't bound by HIPAA here, because it affects the patient. They can easily recommend suspension.
It helps the patient. How does it help the doctor?
These same arguments about protesters come up time and time again. "If you REALLY want my support, be civilly disobedient to a point where it doesn't affect me."
Like, it's cool that your support is conditional proportionately to how inconvenienced you are.
I'm sure the people they're protesting on behalf of would have better arguments, but, y'know, they're dead. But hey, gotta to get to that job, rite.
You also have to take into account the psychological trauma that's associated from mistakes (which as a med student, resident or even an attending do happen more than wed like, but we're human) that lead to patient deaths. 2nd year residency is where attendings keep a closer eye on their residence, after the "oh man I'm a doctor now" aura wears off and you realize you're in the shit and decisions you make matter.
Or maybe not screw over the general populace you're trying to beholden to your cause. Novel concept I know.
But to answer your question, yes, normal everyday Americans do need to get to and from their jobs. God forbid they have a life and family that doesn't necessarily jive with your "peaceful protest" agenda.
Like, if you are really inconvenienced to a point where you say "Man, I was almost with you guys but now I'm not because I'm five minutes late to work!", then you were never an ally to begin with and were looking for excuses not to be.
Same tired arguments. Same faulty logic.
No. It's your logical fallacy that everyone and/or anyone even gives enough fucks to begin with. Hint, more than likely they don't. The purpose of a protest is to educate and bring awareness to a cause. Not to initially antagonize those you're trying to convince. Such a basic damn concept yet it seems to completely befuddle some of you.
Nah, average Joe should let his family starve because this is more important, he's a closet racist if he doesn't join the protest instead.
Golly gosh, why can't these black folks reminisce about MLK and march politely like Fox News says? Fucking morons, don't they know change comes from neoliberal reforms, like how Deray and co. got those bad cops to wear body cams? Freedom is so easy.
This debate is a good example of how limited education and conditioning makes the hamsters peddle harder without ever stopping to ask "why?"
Those who have the most the lose are always on the frontlines fighting against injustice, while those who do not know the meaning of sacrifice continue to give the assist to the State, thanking them for allowing them to live to see the latest iPhone. PoC should just realize: life isn't fair, just get on the capitalism grind and eventually you'll earn equality.
wait aren't you a white boy bum
and xno isn't
Xno is not-so covertly making an argument that black folks can't participate in civil disobedience and capes for the FBI, so he's whiter than I could ever be.
i hear you man keep fighting the good fight by lecturing people of color about people of color
This sub-forum is really living up (down?) to its name right now.
I know they don't really go into detail about the civil rights era's marches in school, about how nondisruptive and polite they were, that must have been those BPP terrorists occupying buildings and streets lol
Okay, so you're talking about reasons people don't seek help. It sounded like you were saying people actively avoid helping doctors and I was like wtf I'm half Indian therefore I'm acquainted with no less than a bajillion doctors and I've never heard of one of them being refused treatment for anything before.
