Bro, even Liberals (and this is a pretty fuckin liberal board) get annoyed during massive, highway-blocking protests because they're already using their votes and their wallets to support causes which they're acutely fucking aware of. This is the internet age. I don't need a fucking pamphlet to know that brown people get shot by cops on a regular basis.

But what exactly is the goal? What sort of legislation is BLM trying to get passed? "Stop shooting colored people" is not a fucking reasonable goal. It sounds nice and personally I'd love to be less instinctively wary around police officers but what is the plan for accomplishing that? What law is there on the books granting cops open season on only brown people?

As far as I'm aware, there isn't one. People of color get shot more often because white people think we're scary. You don't change that with legislation. You change that by winning over hearts and minds. I don't know the best way to do that but I can guarantee shutting down highways is not it.

On the trouble at the I-94 protest this past weekend;

Black Lives Matter leaders and some witnesses on the scene say the violence started with just a few people who don't represent the movement.

Darryl Spence, a founding member of the God Squad, a group of pastors that serve as intermediaries in and for St. Paul's black community, was there. He said St. Paul Police Chief Todd Axtell called him Saturday night and asked for help.

"So I got about five or six of us, and we went, met up with the Department of Justice, and we stood between the police and the — I don't even know what to call it. The protesters," Spence said.

He'd been down earlier to meet with Black Lives Matter leaders, but not this time.

"I did not see the normal Black Lives Matter people. I saw people with masks on. They were ready for combat," Spence said. "They had gas masks, real gas masks. I was in the Air Force. I know what a gas mask. I was like, 'Where did they get this stuff from?'"

And then, he said, the trouble started.

"A white guy had a pallet in his hand. He was going to get ready to throw a pallet into the ranks of the police and they looked dead in my face and they said, 'You don't understand Black Lives Matter," and I said, 'What?'"

Spence said one of his friends took away the pallet, and they decided it was time to go. A brick hit Spence in the leg as he turned to walk back home, a few blocks away.

Rachael Hartzler of St. Paul was also there and told a similar story. She said the trouble seemed to start as someone dropped fireworks from a footbridge over the freeway about 9 p.m. She said Black Lives Matter organizer Adja Guildersleve called for them to stop.

"She yelled at the person above, and said you need to show discipline and focus," Hartzler said. "This is a peaceful protest and this had been repeated to us throughout the protest. They had been coaching people all along. This was peaceful, no violence will be tolerated."

I know that some locations popped off, but the "movement" as a whole was precisely what the State and the status quo live for: empty threats and "raising awareness" about issues that the majority of the populace feels indifferent about (as Xno was unsuccessfully trying to use as his main talking point to dismiss the premise of civil disobedience), which can safely be explained-away or silenced completely.

That's only part of it, as I said, demands without consequences is just empty posturing. If you think about it in a strictly business sense, which those in power blocking progress do, what's a small fine, a ruling against a large entity to pay out 2% of their yearly profits, and etc. The only power that protestors have is the purest forms of civil disobedience that have been proven effective not just in the civil rights era, but across the globe.

And doing so on a weekend in front of a police station does not have the same effect as it does on the 405 during rush hour, because it's clear as fuck people are going to hate the shit out of them for doing that. But to the protesters, showing solidarity is more important than what commuters think.

lol what? Bull fucking shit. If the goal is showing solidarity, doing it in front of a police station where the people most involved with the situation are gathered is the best possible answer. If you're an activist yourself then you know as well as I do that some people plan shit like this for the express purpose of pissing other people off because they're angry and want to hurt people and not because they think it's a "better way to show solidarity."

Fuck those Olympic-level mental gymnastics. If you actually want to show solidarity, you actually are way better off doing it in front of a police station and showing an appropriate level of gravitas because that is how you most effectively convey the right kinds of feelings to both the community and the people walking around every day with loaded firearms.
