I once got stuck in traffic coming down 95 and took over an hour to go 12 miles. The reason was because a bunch of people were standing on one of the pedestrian overpass/walkway things waving American flags with an IMPEACH OBAMA banner draped over the side.

When I'm commuting and my commute is fucked by pedestrians trying to get my attention, my tolerance and patience just erodes. What do these people do for a living that they can be out fucking up and snarling traffic during rush hour? What are they trying to do by making people hideously late to get to their destination? I'm more inclined to just assume anyone stopping commuter traffic has an equally ridiculous motive in mind. You don't win allies with that sort of gesture, no one has ever sat in non-moving traffic and thought "Gee, I wonder what lesson I could be learning from the people who are standing in the road and causing this bottle neck?"

I'm almost positive I had to deal with the same subject-derailing in the Ferguson thread about defending BLM movement as a "white ally". I try to include my personal experience/ideology whenever I can if I feel the conversation is worth adding to it. Considering that most of my biggest fans readily admit to never reading what I have to say, I'm not surprised that they thought I was Fela Kuti.

All I wanted to do is expand on this debate of civil disobedience and point out the reasons on why it's done and why it's effective. Stating that tact wasn't all that different during the civil rights era isn't "middle-class whitesplaining" about PoC's actions. Neither is trying to put things in perspective about just how dire shit is for those who are driven to risking arrest/violence on the highway in order to get their voices heard.

I've never been told to "check my privilege" because I know how to stay in my lane and listen to the oppressed. I've lived in predominantly black and brown ghettos all my life and currently have the privilege of living in a Habitat home in my days of living below poverty.
