I dunno about laws like that.
I dunno about laws like that.
I'd be only ok with it if they would also strengthen/create laws to punish officers who injure/kill people unnecessarily.
Because this very much feels like it's to continue that mindset of "protect our own and fuck the rest."
Man, talk about non-intersecting data sets. I didn't think it was possible for someone to take a baseball bat to a cop and live long enough to be charged with a hate crime.
JMC and whoever was with him showed restraint. Something a lot of people don't have, and not necessarily something you can really test for. In 33 years, my dad had to pull his gun with the intent to shoot only one (didn't have to shoot), but I've known others where anything more than a traffic stop it seems like the gun is out, and a lot of them when walking or standing, their hand is right on top of the gun (dunno if that's taught during the academy to deter people from trying to disarm you or if it's just paranoia, JMC can answer that one.)
Don't you already get fucked up the ass legally for attacking and/or killing a cop? Honestly don't see any reasons for cops to require extra legal protection. If anything we need stricter punishment for cops who are hurting people.
"Protect our own and fuck the rest" sounds about right.
The ems/fire part is huge...again, if the charges stick....we have people get assaulted probably at least once every 2 weeks if not more often
This pretty much. They can kill us with 0 repercussions but you punch a cop? Hate crime.
I'm ok with them upping it for Fire/EMS. But cops really don't need more fucking protections, they can already beat the shit out of you while handcuffed and claim you're resisting arrest.
After working in security for a long time (not quite the same, I know), they are trained to have their hand on their weapon even while it's holstered, and yeah, it is meant as a deterrent from people attempting to disarm the officer. It's a lot harder to disarm someone when you have to move their hand away first.
I can tell you medical personnel are often assaulted because they're medical personnel and not cops.
If a patient refuses your help and you touch them anyway you can get charged with assault. I'm totally behind first responders having some protection.
Cops don't need it. Not to that extent. They're not a protected race. It's a fucking profession.
I have to get malpractice insurance. Maybe cops should do the same, and then maybe not let a dude with a bat get away with assault. Hate crime is going a bit too far.
Why ask for someone's ID before trying to arrest them when you can taser them and then take it from their limp body?
Yeah, that pretty aptly describes the problem with police. First they fuck up and taze a guy for absolutely no reason. Then, after it's discovered that they fucked up and legal action is threatened because his civil rights were violated, they decide to use their own legal power to fuck with the guy even more.
I ASKED FOR HIS ID FOUR TIMES (after only asking for his name and not actually identifying him and just saying he LOOKED like the suspect).
Kind of like I'm going to shoot every black guy with a broad set nose syndrome...
Could you imagine if that police officer didn't have a taser?
4 cops shot at Baton Rouge police HQ, 3 dead, 1 critical. Shooter active.
What the fuck
Possibly as many as 7 cops shot now, but no additions to the death toll (hopefully)
3 shooters, according to a source
