I can't remember where I read it but there was a psychologist who was doing mental rehab work for police/fire and military. He published an article that outlined police officers and their mental stability after killing people. There's almost a 75% chance if a police officer kills someone in the line of duty, they're likely to kill someone again. Built up memories of their first killing and repressed terror from the incident can come out and cause them react faster to a deadly force incident with deadly force over a fresh recruit who has never killed anyone before.
While I joke about this incident and think I would have done better, I can't absolutely say for sure I wouldn't do the same thing. Close quarters shit is tricky. Low lighting, aggression, and a weapon are some pretty bad combinations of a shitty day, even if it is a pen. A lot of terrible and horrible officer deaths have happened recently so it's put me on edge and I notice it amongst my peers. With that recent ambush murdering of those officers in Britain, a lot of the conspiracy theories are working around the Law Enforcement community like when the Washington State killings happened. Too many "random" police murders of ambushings and back killings for it to be "random" or a "coincidence".
