I don't think you can fear for your life that much if he walked away from the dog went back to his car, got a rifle, and shot the dog with a rifle. Or was he really walking around with a rifle rather than his sidearm?

So basically, "vicious" dog was in the yard, and the cop felt he had the right to go all over the yard in execution of the warrant, so he executed the dog to protect himself from the dog in the yard, even though the first step should've been knocking on the front fucking door. Or maybe I'm just presuming that this house was organized the way literally every house I've ever seen is, where the fenced in yard is in the back of the house and the front door is freely accessible.

Right, I was leaving open the possibility that the house is somehow fully fenced in and the dog was inside the fence. More specifically, in order to execute the warrant (by going to the door), he had to get past the dog, and the most expedient method was by killing it, which he justified by having a warrant. That seems extraordinarily unlikely, but it's not impossible. It's also immensely fucked up, but somehow I think the law would be on his side if that was actually the case.

Did they specify the type of warrant it was? There are warrants that are referred to as no knock where you essentially bust right in. Very rarely used, and is already a source of controversy after someone done fucked up, put the wrong address on the warrant and a grannie got shot.
