Because it would show that she in some way understands the instructions she has been given? Can hear the cops? Has any idea what is happening? If there's one-way communication and she's not being super aggressive with her gun, why would they even think she understands them?

I mean, the obvious option is to simply move away from her. How accurate do you think an 83 year old really is at 50 feet with a pistol? Do you think she can track a moving target?

Pointing it at them is as aggressive as you can get without shooting lol. And why would you ever give her the chance to see how accurate she is?

Unless she is sighting in on the cop and they're in a shouting match, deciding to shoot some 83 year old paranoid hobag is probably not smart.

Not that I agree or disagree with what happened, you're not going to wait for someone with a weapon to aim it at you during a heated exchange to decide the level of force. That's nothing to do with law enforcement, that's just flat out stupid lol.

You don't shoot to wound. If you have your gun pulled and finger on the trigger, you are trained to kill. A wounded person can still return fire and kill you. A dead person can't.

You never know what someone's training and background may be with firearms. One of my Captains is 75 and I'd feel sorry for anyone who pointed a gun at him. And i've seen people much younger who couldn't hit a non moving target at 15 feet away. I don't even recall the article stating what kind of gun she was carrying. A lot of handguns now are much lighter and don't have a lot of kick back. If she had a tiny gun and even practiced at a range semi regularly (it's fucking texas, all the more plausible a grandma can be a decent shot) then at that short of distance moving or not I could see her accidentally shooting and injuring or killing an officer.

The whole reason the police were there was due to a hangup 911 call. I don't know of a single agency that does not send a car out to a hangup 911 call.
