I'd say military is definitely a bit of an over generalization. Can't really speak for all branches but for the most part people in Navy and Airforce aint really trained to shoot people. As for people who are actually expected to be in combat a fair amount I wouldn't doubt it. They are trained to fight and we have been fighting darker skinned people so makes sense.

They do kind of teach you to dehumanize the enemy though. It's not really overt, just tied up in the colloquialisms. For example, ragheads and towelheads, which are slurs, are used pretty regularly. You're conditioned to not really view them as people so that when the time comes, you don't hesitate to kill them if you need to. Obviously, being shot at first is a good motivator, but they kind of pile that one on as well. I know a lot of current and former military who have trouble separating from that mindset now. (Rampant Islamophobia in this country doesn't exactly help them get over it, either.)

So there may be something to that, but not really sure. Because the brown people aren't really black, and they have an entirely different mannerism and look about them. It would be hard to make that sort of connection considering the people we're engaging with in the Middle East and how much they differ from the American black man/woman.

That's my two cents though, I've been out for 12 years now so it may not be worth that much.

It's a systemic problem; from the politicians who profit off the criminalization of black and brown bodies, to the top brass who view neighborhoods as a bunch of quotas with imaginary borders, and unfit cops who patrol communities that they have zero emotional or cultural attachment to beyond stages of "threat" and pity.

Having ex-military with various flavors of sociopathy and/or PTSD commonplace in the force just makes for an easier scapegoat, like pointing at bodycams.

Eh, scapegoat is a terrible way to put sociopathic behavior and PTSD. Those are legit contributors to the problem. They most certainly aren't in the same neighborhood or even universe as body cams.

    But keep on bumin'.

The problem with police brutality being an "rotten apple" issue is the biggest scapegoat of them all. Making ex-military police out to be anything but a drop in the pool of blood left behind the prison industrial complex is narrow-minded.

Some people believe a nation-wide requirement of body cams on all LEOs will somehow magically make state-sanctioned murderers change their behavior (and all the way up the chain of command). Some people also believe removing "bad apples" is the ultimate solution to all police brutality and corrupt behavior. I see no difference in the futility of both of these goals and neither should anyone else who spends the time looking beyond the cosmetics of the justice system and the state.

I'd say that the ubiquity of cellphone videocameras has unambiguously changed the discussion of police brutality in this country. I'd have to assume that strapping one to every police officer will have some effect.

Right now you're seeing the "Falling off" or "Failed to activate" excuse in some cases without the followup consequence of having the police version of the story instantly be called to question. Cameras are starting to get utilized, and to some success like the case of the Pokemon Go player who tried to blow that police interaction way out of proportion with a bank robbery suspect in the area. We just need to keep on with the message that they're not going to just be used as recording devices for good police interactions only.

I would think that it's not a military issue since they're actually trained to only fire when fired upon, and have MUCH stricter rules of engagement.

Did you guys see the one about the "training" where a cop shot a civilian with live rounds instead of blanks?

Florida woman killed by officer during a "shoot/don't shoot" training exercise. Officer didn't know live rounds were loaded.

The fact that they don't eject the clip and double check before these exercises blows my mind. This is some pretty negligent shit. And the fact that he shot multiple times...

Why would you even use real guns during an exercise like this.

In a test to check the ease of filing Police Misconduct Complaints in Minneapolis, only 2 people, out of 15, were given an oppertunity to file. In addition, department websites offer inconsistent information on how to file a complaint and the Officer of Police Conduct Review (OPCR) / Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) were only available during business hours.

The increased awareness and discussion caused by citizens documenting with their cellphones has acted as a catalyst for challenging the police state, but body cameras have and will continue to be ineffectual to seeking justice and real change. How long will it take to regulate the guaranteed usage/activation of the bodycams? When will we get that federal mandate that requires independent handling of this vital piece of evidence?

Unfortunately, the videos of murders are only stoking the fires of less-than capable individuals who seek revenge on the frontlines, as they know they are powerless right now to change an institution that does not value their lives. The chants of "Black Lives Matter" encapsulates this, and yet look how long it takes for those around them to understand what it even means.

And what change is that? The elimination of law enforcement?

Body cams are there for the protection of the people AND the police. Wasnt it two weeks ago that Faith Ekakitie made a post on facebook said he was run up by multiple cops with guns drawn in his face, and everyone (especially you) blew that shit out of proportion when the body cams showed that one cop had a gun drawn (and remember, the person theyre looking for just committed armed robbery of a bank), and it was nowhere near his face?
Or the times people record the police screwing "THIS IS POLICE BRUTALITY HE DID NOTHING THIS IS GOING ON FACEBOOK", then the body cam video comes out and you see all the shit the "victim" did before the cellphone came out? Or you know, that guy who was "shot down in cold blood" at the Sev last year...yet the body cams showed he was essentially walking away from the cops, then when told to "keep his hands in the air", reached into his pants to show he had no weapon, yet this was the same motion he would be using to pull a gun tucked in his waistband.

There are plenty of dirty cops who arent getting the justice they deserve, but in your eyes, anyone with a badge is automatically the enemy.

The chief also describing the weapon as a revolver that is not a service weapon, but he declined to say anything more about the firearm.

Going forward, Lewis said, potentially lethal weapons will "absolutely not" be used in future demonstrations of this sort.

Wow, that is fucking retarded. When I got invited to an FBI Academy Reunion shoot, we were allowed to bring our own guns, but were not allowed to use our own ammunition. It had to be supplied by the range just to prevent any sort of accident.

Honestly, until the blue line is gone and the bad cops are actually punished, then yes, they are. If you're protecting murderers just because they're cops and "your own", then does that make you any better?

idk where I stand on this police stuff anymore but yes, if you're a cop who isn't protesting with BLM and just doing your day-to-day job you're better than the cop who indiscrimantly kills people
