I was a nihilist in high school for a grand total of 3:37.
Three hours and thirty seven minutes?
why the hell don't they just like... embed a tracking device or something in fake guns? like, a simple device that police can just ping with a sensor, and know that it's a fake? obviously it's not so simple, you'd want to have failsafes to prevent said sensor from being ripped off and put into a real gun to try and trick police (although if there was an obvious mismatch between the sensor and the actual gun it's embedded in, that would be an obvious giveaway), but perhaps you could embed the sensor so that trying to take it out would damage it to the point it doesn't work.
couple that with the orange tip, and you'd probably lower the overall deaths. sure the airsoft guns might cost a bit more... BUT ISN'T THAT A GOOD THING? (plus you could market it as a safety feature to parents)
That's......a really absurd suggestion.
Cops are gonna carry around a device for this precise purpose? One that's not fool-proof? One that accounts for a very small % of police shootings?
How reliable is this device? Reliable enough to stake your life on? Is every single cop in the country gonna carry one of these ridiculously limited-use devices?
How about stop buying your kids realistic toy guns if there's a chance they're gonna fuck about with them.
well obviously a better solution would be to ban realistic looking fake guns in the first place, but that's got a snowballs chance in hell in going through, because people hate common sense.
ridiculous costly less effective methods though? hell yeah, america!
I didn't mean to imply my suggestion was ideal or even close to perfect. it's obviously not. i'm just wondering how unfeasable it would be considering we use sensors for a lot of stuff these days anyways. police already carry lots of specialized gadgets anyways, what's one more strapped onto their dashboards? and the sensor would hopefully show the model of the fake gun so if you see it saying it's a pistol model and they're carrying a shotgun or something, there's obviously something wrong there.
AGAIN though, not perfect, prone to flaws, but it seems strange that our only real defense against this is a bloody thin coat of orange paint at the tip. i realize the KISS principle should always apply, but we're in an age of self driving cars and holograms, you'd think technology would have a better solution for this.
How bout we just ban all non far-east asians from guns.
Knives too, Save a life bin that knife.

Ok, sikh's only
Glazed right past the concept of firearm safety/handling/accountability and straight to pushing the responsibility onto someone else. Neat.
Probably the only real way to tackle the gun issue is to borrow from science fiction and hope for tech like finger/palm print recognition on the grip (can't fire if wearing gloves and you're not the owner or other certified user) or even some form of facial recognition as you're holding it up to aim (and wouldn't fire if not holding the gun properly). The camera angle could even go a step further and lock the gun out if people are detected in line of sight or, to play on the sensor idea, law enforcement. Programming could even restrict use to a specific area with(out) official registration. Warnings to law enforcement could also be broadcast if a gun is aimed at someone and the trigger pulled (even if discharge is locked out by some of the above). Of course, I doubt people would want to have to plug their guns in for a charge just to use them, but that may also be an inevitability if we shift from bullets to lasers/stuns.
The usual snag with any of this, however, would be to get the current traditional firearms off the street/destroyed. Over enough years it'd be harder to get ahold of them, sure, but immediate differences likely wouldn't be felt. Crazies may try to manufacture their own versions, certainly, but I'd say they equally risk their work literally blowing up in their hands without all the tools official manufacturers have at their disposal.
Implementing technology designed to take control away from a device. Device doesn't function unless in a perfect thumbs-over Isosceles stance, regardless of need. Police can remotely disable devices. Zero faith in someone's ability to create a firearm. Supporting the use of a less-than-lethal device to counter a lethal threat. Recycling 300M+ firearms including NFA registrations.

Isn't this like, literally what the Patriots did in MGS4? Some of you are starting to jump the shark on gun control lol.
Man, i've seen nigga's make shotguns out of a shovel and a 2x4. I daresay banning all guns or adding fingerprint lockdown sensors will do a lot less than some think.
Check out the illegal gun makers in the phillipines as well. Bring someone like 5$ and some car scraps and cans and they will make you an uzi.

Making your own gun is not crazy and is 100% legal, no permit required. And certainly less crazy than your first paragraph. The most complicated pieces to make aren't even the frames(what the atf considers a firearm). I can make an ar lower with run of the mill shop tools. Most specialized tool I need for making an ak is a hydraulic press, and really I could do it with less.

It was pretty common and a hobby for a lot of people I knew in TN/KY to build your own weapon.
It isn't even so much as adding a layer of tyranny, but better ensuring firearms are actually used responsibly. If a guy who's given up on life can't murder-suicide his family with a shotgun, I'd consider it a win. If police outright know a kid can't cause harm with a locked gun, you're not gonna have a dead kid. And related more to home-made weapons, I'd find it less likely your average Joe could machine up an automatic for maximum death dealing. Meanwhile, you like game hunting in a certain stretch of land? Register that particular area. Technically wouldn't be much different than paying for tags when going for deer and such, though people no doubt bitch about having to do that.
We can try to hammer that parents need to be more responsible, (anti-)police culture, Darwinism, or whatever, but the inevitability is that people are going to fuck up for whatever reason as either the enabler or unfortunate recipient. I 100% realize I don't have the boner for guns that some Americans do, but this is just one of those cases where my cynicism breeds a form of optimism in the "What if..." category. Lucky for some, it'll remain science fiction for the immediate future.
