Yup, you're right, because "why didnt those cops use tasers against the guy charging them with a knife" or "why didnt those cops shoot him in the leg" are completely valid questions to be asking.

There are plenty of shitty cops, and there are plenty of things that these shitty cops have done to warrant the scrutiny (ie: the idiot cop who shot Terence Crutcher in Tulsa who "didnt realize what she was doing", or almost all of the Chicago PD, or that shit with Dejuan Yourse posted last page (guy on his own porch), the trigger happy cop who was looking for a reason to shoot a PI and the rest of the team who were trying to fabricate charges on him ), and then there are situations where people are doing the stupidest fucking things possible and the media and SJW are still going "but why did the cops shoot".

Mentally challenged man literally assumed a firing position towards the police with a black object in his hand..."but why did the cops shoot"
Dude charges at cops with a knife..."but why did the cops shoot"
Dude acts defiant at a cop who wants to ask questions, then puts his hand in his waistband..."but why did the cops shoot".

Scrutinize the shit out of the shitty cops, but dont make it a fucking witch hunt to the point where the good cops are afraid of the backlash they will receive for touching their gun.

Or do you mean 'the mess' is policemen are out there abusing their power towards people, black people, especially?

And what does the media/sjws "scrutinizing" their actions for as many people possible to see, who are not involved in any way and have literally 0 power to affect the outcome, do? What's the benefit of the witch hunting? It should be against what we want, as people, for at least two reasons. Goes against innocent until proven guilty and fear mongers a whole bunch which makes people do/think dumb things.
"This mess" as in the rampant abuse of power. And I don't care about media scrutinizing, because, you're right, it's pointless. I mean on a professional level. I know there are review boards and such, but they're the ones I was talking about earlier that let them off the hook if it even looks vaguely justifiable. I don't want witch hunting, I don't think a majority of police are corrupt or some such conspiratorial nonsense, but there certainly are bad actors that get ignored because of all the good the rest of them are doing. If someone takes another human life, no matter how obvious the circumstances, they should be able to defend their actions.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not, but yes, those are questions that should be asked every use of lethal force. If they don't have a valid answer as to why they didn't, then that is a serious problem.

Cops should be hesitant to use their guns. It is not a first choice, it's a last choice. Yes, I agree that there are a lot of times that the use of deadly force is justified, and if it is, asking questions to confirm that is perfectly fine. I would rather waste time and tax money making sure each case was justified than give them the benefit of the doubt to freely shoot people because they felt vaguely threatened. And I'm talking about scrutinizing, as in critically examining, not demonizing.

I'm pretty sure jmc has answered both of those questions a couple times. iirc: Tazer is used to subdue someone who is being extremely non-compliant but not a threat to safety as the tazer prong can fail to pierce the clothing/skin and thus wont work, and aiming for the leg is an extremely unlikely shot.

The example I used was a suspect charging at the cops with a knife. Is "this idiot was charging at me with a knife" not a valid reason to you?

Cops should be kept to the highest standard, yes, but its not like these people are two year olds who dont know better. We, as adults of a civilized country, should know how to act in a civilized manner.

I see what you meant now, makes sense and I agree. What sucks is the proper due diligence on these things takes months. And by then nobody gives a shit about the truth

Anyway, I guess it comes down to what we all deem is justifiable. Like, I'm betting that tulsa chick gets off with just about nothing. All people think happened was black man was being black man and gets shot by white woman with back up at her side. But actually, she was on the scene for several minutes alone with him (~15). He was being totally unresponsive and even walked the woman cop back from his vehicle (which she was inspecting since when she arrived it was an abandoned SUV on the middle of the highway with bomb threats or some shit) with hands in pocket to the passenger side of her vehicle - there's a shot from the helicopter of her there like 2m away from the guy with hand on gun. After she pulls the gun out he takes his hand out of his pocket but begins to walk over to the driver side of his car! Backup arrives as he makes it over, and reaches into the car with his left hand (left hand is the hand in his pocket prior btw). She shoots immediately before he gets tasered and dropped to the ground by the taser

The only thing against her, as far as I see, is that she shot him after backup arrived. She would have had an ezpz case if she shot him in front of her cruiser when he was walking her down because 300 lb man vs at most 150 lb woman from just 2 meters away is an easy bet to make.

But ya, aside from the fist fight with dejaun yourse I thought this was the biggest police overstepping, and then I watched some mega right wing youtube video of an angry black woman who was an ex cop who took me through all the released footage/pics instead of just the dash cam of the police that arrived on the scene moments before the gunshot

*edit, can post the link to the video I watched of the black woman ex cop narrating things, but it's long (~20min) and I'd have to go looking for it. But everything I said minus the hands in pocket is basically shown in the cut ~50sec helicopter footage all over youtube. It starts with him hands up walking away from the cruiser and the pilots go "he's got his hands up for her now", because that's when she drew the gun on him and started yelling obscenities

here's the 50 sec heli footage
    Spoiler: show

oh yeah and here's a big question that changed the way I perceived the thing was; if you've got a gun trained on someone + demanding they don't move... but they keep moving - towards their car - what da fuck are they doing? What could possibly be the motive

Big post, my bad, but I thought it was relevant towards just how difficult even a 'clear cut' case could be.

Yes, that's a perfectly valid reason. That's all that's needed for that scenario. The frustration comes more from the fact that the question isn't even asked, more often than not. Things jump straight to political ideals rather than examining it situation by situation. I think that's one of the biggest pitfalls of the BLM movement as a whole, they've almost universally thrown their weight behind all the wrong cases instead of propping up ones that are much more blatant, malicious, undeniable examples.

No, the biggest pitfall of the BLM movement as a whole is that it has no centralized leadership who could control/direct their efforts and disavow the loonies who take shit too far.

Honestly it was a weak as fuck claim for bringing the man aside in the first place, but it's not like there was any violence happening. Even when the dude was flailing around, he just held his grip on the jacket and wasn't reaching for cuffs/taser/gun or use any sort of real force to pacify him. There's no way in hell you can honestly think the cops should be charged in that situation unless you're just extremist anti-police. That's an excellent example of restraint.

You are right. After the altercation was initiated by the cop, he showed great restraint and professionalism in not shooting the guy. The incident should never have happened in the first place though. A simple "Excuse me, Sir. You probably shouldn't walk on the shoulder. It's unsafe. There's a sidewalk right there and I would feel much better if you used it." Would have probably sufficed. If the guy then chose to continue walking down the shoulder, that's his own risk. If there is some sort of city code disallowing that, then write him a citation. Cuffing him and charging him with some bullshit charge that will get dropped by the DA was nothing but a power play and looks very bad for the department.

I wish more cops would stop people walking/jogging on the roadway when there is a sidewalk present. Every day going home for me I have to get into the opposite traffic lane because of packs of joggers doing cardio outside at the local gym. None of them use the sidewalk which is even on the same side of the roadway they are using. I do agree that taking him in for processing is a bit much.

I don't know how things are done in Minnesota but when we have construction closing down a side walk there is a sign that says something like sidewalk closed use the other side instead of playing in traffic fucktard.
