Castle Rock v. Gonzales was determined they don't have to.

Not that I agree with what happened in that story, its pretty fucked up. But cops are people too, with families to go home to. If we just expect people to go out and die for us, no one is going to take that job.

I'm pretty sure that ruling (with Scalia writing the majority opinion) makes the argument that no individual is entitled to preferential enforcement (on the basis that they weren't obligated to enforce a restraining order). It doesn't have much to do with whether we pay them to risk their lives for us or not.

It does, however, make it fairly unclear what they *are* responsible for. If they don't have to come when you call, what do they have to do?

There's a point buried in the trollbait, though. The police are sworn to protect and serve. Somewhere along the line that stopped applying to anyone perceived as a potential threat.

party "hey tank, flash and hold the mob for us so we don't all die"

drk "fuck no, fuck you guys let the blm tank, im a dps"

we don't take that shit from bad tanks in raids, why should we take it from our policemen? i'm not saying they should be foolhardy and leeroy jenkins into dangerous situations. im saying theyre getting paid to take people in to custody so they can be tried for their crimes. they are not being paid as judge, jury, and executioner. their job naturally entails personal risk. we try to outfit them to minimize that risk with training, bulletproof vests, riot gear, etc, but that gear is not supposed to be there for offense, only defense.

when you sign up for the job, you're there to protect and serve the people. a protector that wusses out at a yapping dog has no business playing tank for america. maybe they should find a job that they're actually suited for, and serve in that way instead.

Oh absolutely. I'm not trying to say they should just shoot anyone that is even the tiniest threat. But lets be real. We both knew what he meant. And comparing Actual real live breathing people to a video game with is fucking ridiculous.

What's the first rule of firearm safety? What's the department policy regarding the presence of a lethal weapon? Would you have been happier if the gun was loaded and the officer is shot and possibly killed in an effort to subdue and put into custody Mr. Suicide-by-Cop?

The last page or so of back-and-forth highlights the absurd dichotomy of thought the general public has towards the police.

They're heroes that risk their lives for us and deserve great respect while simultaneously not being obligated to do anything in particular, including risk their lives for others.

If this guy's gun was loaded and the officer was shot dead on the spot he'd have had a funeral with honors, but because he chose to knowingly put himself at risk to defuse the situation without violence he was fired.

Pretty big story in Florida right now, a few days ago in Orlando this dude with a lot of priors murdered his pregnant ex girlfriend, then shot and killed a female deputy who was trying to apprehend him. He stole the deputy's car and fled, struck another deputy's car injuring him (but not fatally) and escaped. Ten days pass, and he was arrested earlier tonight. The local news stations were all over the Sheriff's office as he was brought in for processing, and the dude had a bloody and fucked up face, yelled "They beat me up!" to the cameras as he was taken inside.

TL;DR scumbag kills his pregnant ex gf, murders a deputy sheriff and almost kills another, cries foul when captured alive and cops rearrange his face a bit

Suspect unfortunately slipped and fell headfirst into the pavement four or five times. Lucky there wasn't any nearby stairs or he might not have lived long enough to enter processing.

I know we want to joke about it, but we should be nothing less than ecstatic that a black man who killed more than one cop and injured more was bought in alive to be sentenced. Sure he's a little rough for wear but cmon, this is YUGE!

I should clarify, this guy for sure killed one cop, but a second cop died in the search for him while on his motorcycle. I don't know if he was chasing the suspect or just straight fucked up while motorcycle cop-ing, but I'm sure they're gonna put that death on his charges too cause why not.

A department-issued AR-15 with a loaded magazine that was stolen out of a locked sheriff's vehicle in MN last Friday, was just announced to the public today. An additional magazine and a 9mm were also stolen.

Are there police regulations for keeping firearms in unattended vehicles?
