We don't have a system of "all the guns." Automatic weapons have been banned for civilian use since 1986. Semi-automatic weapons are all functionally the same. Functionally, there is no difference between an AR frame and a traditional semi-auto hunting rifle. They both fire one bullet with one trigger pull and chamber the next round in the magazine. What is going to take to make anti-gun proponents happy? Every weapon being bolt action?

The point I'm trying to make is the difference between an "assault weapon" and just a "hunting rifle" is usually only aesthetic.

Automatics registered by the ATF before the Hughes Amendment entered effect in 1986 are legal to possess and transferable (on a federal level, state laws vary on this). However the price starts at 20-25k plus the $200 tax stamp and 6+ month wait time. Given that you can dump a 30 round magazine of .223 ($9 @ 35 cent per round) in an M16 in ~3 seconds means you're also blowing tons of money on ammo. It's a rich man's game.

Main defining part of of an assault rifle is having a full-auto selector switch. Everything else like adjustable stocks, barrel shrouds, pistol grips, muzzle devices, foregrips, and having the shoulder thing that goes up is window dressing and does nothing to the actual functionality of the firearm.

Considering the constant chorus of "If only XXX had a gun", where XXX is literally any person you could reasonably put into the situation, yes we do have a system of "all the guns". I don't care if people want to have guns for hunting, home protection, or even just because they enjoy shooting (at a range), but it's more than clear that the argument of more guns = safer is simply not true.
