Not sure what contributes to the type of extreme disdain for the homeless that is so common in society. So she sprayed silly string at a different officer. That's not what she got decked for. Cop isn't even looking at that point and the one that is looking at her chose not to engage her.

Probably most people's inability to empathize with someone who clearly chooses to live that way coupled with NYC's already bad reputation of the homeless. Put general ignorance of why there are so many homeless in NYC to begin with.

So people complain because they hate them, not because they are being harassed by smelly drunk guys who are driving people away from businesses? I don't know if you want to believe there is a deep social issue that a hate for homeless people breeds from, but there isn't. People just want to be left alone. I deal with a ton of homeless people daily, and I don't hate them, quite the opposite actually. I spend more time interacting with homeless people than most other people. But that's at my job, not my home. And honestly, would you want a bunch of homeless guys hanging out in front of your house or on your porch doing homeless guy stuff? If not, why do you hate homeless people??

I had something written in an earlier draft where I said I don't hate them, but I understand why people do (but I guess I took it out). It's part of my job to interact with them. If I didn't have to I wouldn't. I'm prepared to deal with them at work. It's completely different for people who don't have to interact with them. And I know for a fact that a large part of me not hating them is that they don't give me the same problems they give other people because they know it would go badly for them. Most people are on their best behavior when the police are around.

If you don't mind homeless people hanging out in front of your house, you haven't spent time where homeless people hang around. The phrase "don't shit where you eat" does not apply to them. A more accurate phrase would be "shit everywhere...including where you eat, drink, sleep, and use drugs". And I hope you don't want to open up a lemonade stand or hot dog cart.
