Should the dog have been shot? Probably not.
Should the owner have done more to secure the dog/not be a dipshit? Probably.

From what I've read, the guy is very much anti cop and was probably trying to get something like this to happen. Does it make what happened right? No, not at all. But still, an outcome like this was exactly what this guy wanted. Both sides are retarded.

Eh I can sorta see the justification even if the dog was just being playful. Not saying it was/wasn't, but it could be a possibility. Lot of dogs I walked at the shelter enjoyed jumping up on me in the same manner the dog in the video did.

Dog was just trying to be loyal to his master.

unfortunately it's master was a nigger. who the fuck blasts music from their car at a tense moment like ARMED ROBBERY? who the fuck records police during tense moments like this where people are already on edge? it's 100% worse when you know somebody's got a camera pointed at you, people act differently.

death of the dog could've been avoided on both ends.

    Uh... yeah...

Anyway, I think we can all agree the real victim here was the poor dog. Both his master and the police were stupid and it paid the price.

10-Year-Old boy sues Police for being tasered for not cleaning a cop car on career day
A 10-year-old boy attending a Tularosa, N.M., Intermediate School’s Career Day expected it to be fun and educational, but instead he ended up in the emergency room.

The boy, identified as R.D., blacked out after receiving 50,000 volts of electricity when struck by a police officer’s Taser gun.

Rachel Higgins, a guardian appointed by the court to protect the child’s privacy filed a lawsuit Oct. 26 in 1st Judicial District Court in Santa Fe County against Police Officer Chris Webb and the New Mexico Department of Public Safety on behalf of R.D., claiming that Webb fired his electronic control weapon at the boy on May 4, 2012.

Webb has been charged with battery, failure to render emergency medical care, unreasonable seizure and excessive force.

Higgins will appear in court to represent the boy because the family members live in a small town and do not want to reveal their identities.

The lawsuit claims police officers drove their patrol cars onto the intermediate school campus, where Webb asked a group of boys which one would like to clean his patrol unit.

R.D. raised his hand to say he did not want to clean the police officer’s car.

Webb then said, according to the lawsuit, “Let me show what happens to people who do not listen to the police.” He then “shot his Taser gun at the boy’s chest,”
said the family’s attorney Shannon Kennedy of the Kennedy Law Firm of Albuquerque.

Kennedy said instead of calling paramedics over, who were also on campus for the Career Day event, Webb pulled the barbs from the Taser out of the boy’s chest.

“He grabbed the wires, he yanked them and it came out of the prongs, and then he went up to me and he ripped the prongs out of my chest,”
R.D. told ABC News in September.

The boy said the officer then took him to the restroom to wash off and then to the nurses office.

“R.D.’s mother arrived at the school in absolute shock and rushed him to the emergency room,” said Kennedy.

The lawsuit claims that as a result of the battery, the boy now has symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.

“He wakes up in the middle of the night holding his chest afraid his heart will stop,” said Kennedy. “He says, “Mommy I’m afraid I’ll never wake up again.”

According to the police report, Webb said a group of students had asked him to show them his Taser gun, and when he pulled it out, it accidentally went off and hit R.D. in the chest.

Webb stated in the report that he immediately shut off the power switch, removed the cartridge and threw the Taser gun to the ground.

Calls to the New Mexico Motor Transportation Police Department by ABC News were not returned.

Kennedy said she received a response to a public records request that showed an officer had tested the Taser gun to check for any malfunctions.

“Officer Michael Walker generated a Taser X26 report showing that the Taser had no problems with its battery, that it fired correctly, and that it did not deploy when shaken from side to side,” said Kennedy.

Kennedy said there was no monetary cap for damages in the lawsuit, but because it’s a federal case it could end in a multi-million dollar verdict.

ABC News did reach out to Tularosa New Mexico Intermediate School, but the school said it couldn’t comment because of the pending litigation.

I completely disagree the cop was in the right. Because that ignores EVERYTHING that led up to it. Even let's say the guy was acting like a dick, that's all he was doing. He complied with the handcuffs. The cops could have easily let the dog go to the owner, and have the owner secure the dog properly. It was the officers that exacerbated the situation. I don't think it's fair to say that when cops don't know how to handle shit and then shit goes wrong because they're being ignorant retards, it's then in their right to kill an animal when the animal reacts to the situation that THEY created.

If they started poking the dog with a stick and the dog reacted and they shot it, would they still be in the right? They caused the dog to act that way.
The owner did the only thing he thought was right and I don't think he foresaw the dog jumping out to protect him. I don't believe there was any ill-will on his part except the circumstances leading up to the arrest. If he indeed breached the perimeter and kept interfering with the investigation, he's definitely wrong. It looks more like he was showing off to the other people watching the incident unfold and that's a concern during high-risk incidents like this. You have a disorderly person with a potentially dangerous animal breaching your perimeter and attempting to escalate the situation when tensions are already high. Obstruction of that nature here in D.C. is a Class D felony that can land you some serious jail time.

It's like I said before: animal handling of that nature just isn't something that's taught regularly because there are other priorities on a police officers mind when they deal with potentially dangerous situations. There are some fantastic people out there who are natural animal whisperers but there are so many factors you have to take in to consideration when dealing with an animal like that. Does the animal know that the raid you're doing on that house is for gang-members who are murderers and bloodthirsty punks who don't give a shit about his life? No of course not. All he knows is he loves his master regardless of the type of person he is. That animal is a liability because of that simple minded nature. It's a distraction to take the minds off the real threat: the badguys. It's an unfortunate circumstance that he (the dog) is a bystander in our world but in the minds of most people (law enforcement), he'll be a necessary casualty to protect the lives of human beings. Too many horror stories circulate throughout the LEO realm of officers getting distracted by little Butterball Yappy-Pants and get ambushed/shot/stabbed/beaten to death by someone who was waiting for you to get distracted. Just can't take that risk.

Oh and the dog would have been taken care of afterwards. After his arrest, they probably impounded his car and before that happens, they would have called animal control out to deal with it. They're better suited/better equipped to deal with animals than most beat cops.

Your argument is tantamount to saying that the reason people steal televisions is because they would rather steal a television than a clock-radio.
Yes, it is exactly like that. Being worth a lot more than other, smaller electronics is exactly why people go to the effort to steal a TV instead of a clock radio.

Being a lot more effective is exactly why cops use 9mm/.40/.45's over .22 which are dramatically cheaper.

I never said stopping power was the only reason. It's just the one that was directly related to the conversation at hand.
