22:40 grain projectile with a velocity of around 1070 feet per second at the muzzle with a meager 100 foot lbs of energy at the muzzle. At 100 yards you are under 1000 fps and at about 70 ft lbs of energy.
45 : 185 Jacketed Hollow Point is going 1140 FPS with 534 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. At 100 meters it is sub 1000 (951) fps and hitting the target at 372 ft lbs of energy.

Stopping power refers to the kinetic energy the bullet strikes its target with at a given distance. The greater the stopping power, the higher the force of impact will remain at longer distances. Likewise, the greater the stopping power, the greater the force of impact will be at closer distances.

The argument Plow keeps using is stupid because stopping power has really nothing to do with why police use 9mm bullets. Yes, a .22 has less stopping power. Both bullets hitting the same place with the same accuracy will pretty much do the same thing (although a 9mm will obviously do more gross damage per cubic meter of tissue). The question wasn't really whether or not a 9mm is preferred over a .22 because of stopping power. The question was why stopping power is even a factor for a 9mm round when there are many other factors at work.

Because almost every other factor you could think of to list why you'd use a 9mm would lose out to a 22.

It's funny cuz I can see how desperately you want to go "duh they don't use a 22 because it ain't gonna stop anybody!" but realize what that means.

Let's try this analogy one more time.

You are saying something like this:

People like to steal televisions because of their value.

    I asked why.

    Your answer:

Because they're more valuable than radios.

That is not why people steal televisions. That is why people prefer to steal televisions over radios. If you're going to make an implication on the value of a television to a thief then you need to discuss motivation and factors. The high value over lower value items is one factor but it is not one that we are discussing because it alone does not answer the question.

Does that spell it out for you or do I need to e-bay a spellmaster?

They use 9mm because they decided that it was better than the alternatives.

Unless you want to know why they use any ammo at all, i'm not sure how this isn't a valid argument.

Unless of course you were looking for "obviously they use 9mm because it's better than a banana peel," in which case I'm still pretty sure stopping power is a major factor.

What if they laid out banana peels around themselves? That totally would have stopped the dog!
