I actually would rather people don't call me sir. I address everyone by Sir or Mister or Ma'am by habit (military) but I would rather someone be emotional with me. I don't like formalities when I'm talking to someone because it makes them uncomfortable. Plain language, no holds barred. Need to cuss? Go right ahead. As long as you get your point across and I can understand where you're coming from, I don't have a problem with it.

There are some ego-maniac cops out there though. When I was in FTO, my trainer told a victim of a robbery "Address me as MPO, not Officer."

Made me puke on the inside.
"some" is the operative word there.

You sound like one of the good ones. I've met some of the good ones. Problem is that, just like with anything, one bad one is enough to scar most people, and its very easy to only look at the bad ones.

    Like black people, basically.

And bad can come in so many forms. I was pulled over in Maryland for expired registration, cop asked me for my licence which I hadn't noticed had expired about a month before. He goes to his car and comes back and says that he is going to have to arrest me. I am like WTF? He says I have 5 points on my license, to which I say I haven't had a ticket or accident in something like 7 years. He says I am lying, and he is going to arrest me. I start freaking out. Luckily another cop arrives and explains to him that in Virginia 5 points on your license is for 5 years of good driving and not for bad driving. But then he tells the other cop "you can do whatever you want", and then asks me why I am freaking out. Well, you just said you were going to arrest me for no good reason, maybe that doesn't bother you, but it bugs the shit out of me. Fucking idiot was going to arrest me because he doesn't know how the bordering state handles points on licenses (and yes, I live near the border and I was pulled over near the border).

Bad can be abusive, and sometimes it can be plain stupid.

I've had experience with good ones on a few occasions, and this is as a black guy driving a brand new sports car. Granted, I've lived here my entire life, so I'd like to think of it as payback for being a good kid all those years, but some examples:

    1) Pulled over down the street from the state police barracks for doing 54 in a 45, but the officer originally thought it was a 40. He went back to his car to process the ticket initially, then came back and apologized for his mistake, called it a warning for going 9 over, had a chuckle, and that was that.

    2) Pulled over for doing a 44 in a 30 over a semi-blind hill in my old Camaro. Officer said that if he ticketed everyone he saw going over there, he'd have retired 20 years early, but with no hands left from writing so many tickets. Off with a warning.

    3) Pulled over after midnight by an officer for a busted headlight and faulty tail-light. Was also doing about 11 over, but didn't receive a repair order or anything, just a suggestion to "fix up that nice car".

I know if I lived in a city, shit would be 30000 times worse, but then again, I couldn't imagine being an officer in a city like Baltimore, where every time a heatwave comes through, murders skyrocket because niggas be gettin irritable when they're sweating all day. Most times, though, you get out what you put in. Be polite and things usually go well.

this has been my experience as well. This applies to pretty much any human interaction; cops, waiters, bouncers, clerks, etc. just be pleasant and people will generally reciprocate (even if you don't ultimately get your way).

'course, this thread isn't about that. it's about the assholes who don't.

What? He didn't even get to any questioning, he flipped out cuz dude wouldn't roll his window down farther.

Here's the thing: there's absolutely no question that DUI checkpoints are a clear violation of constitutional rights. It's literally declared in the supreme court decision that allowed them to continue that they are clearly violations, but that curbing drunk driving is more important.

Further, the statement that if you're not getting accused of violating rights you're not doing your job really shouldn't be a point of pride, the real world isn't a fucking buddy cop movie.

His point was that people complain about everything no matter what and claim their rights are violated even when they aren't. Not that he was going out and violating people's rights to prove he was a good cop.

Unfortunately the reality is that they're implying if you're not pushing the line you're not trying hard enough, which is not a good thing.

Actually, that's the exact opposite of what he was saying. But hey, you are Plow, you substitute whatever people say with whatever you want, so fuck it.

He said "stuff like this" happens so much that blah blah.

Stuff like this being a person clearly having his rights violated by cops and getting it on tape.

I like Neph as much as the next BG poster, but there is definitely a tone of justification in his posts. People (in my experience) are not always pissed at cops just because there are bad cops and shit happens, they get upset because the good cops often do nothing to stop or restrict the bad ones, or even worse try to justify it. Justifications like "Well, if we did this for every little thing..." or "We have to act like this or we will get shot by you people!" only make it worse by emphasizing the Us vs Them situation.

Should people hassle the cops (unnecessarily)? No. Should people allow the cops to hassle them (unnecessarily)? Absolutely not. Respect is a two way street.

    Here's how this works:

Cop pulls over a sassy old lady for speeding and she gets belligerent and starts screaming at him making multiple accusations. The officer handles the situation like a normal traffic stop ignoring the woman's ranting. Everything is recorded by the dash cam and there is nothing at all that the officer did wrong. The lady proceeds to file a complaint about her rights being violated. It has to be investigated now and in the investigation the officer is proven innocent. He still got accused of violating her rights...but he did nothing wrong.

In fact, there is a video floating around of exactly this situation except with a cranky old man instead of a woman. He throws the ticket back at the officer after he rips it up then the officer makes him get out and pick up the pieces.

This is the "stuff like this" that Neph is talking about. If you, an officer of the law, are so concerned about not offending people because they might accuse you of violating their rights, then you are not doing your job.

K-9s units are trained to "tell" on command. They are basically bullshit used to strip you of your 4th amendment right. It turns out they aren't much better at picking out cars with drugs in them verses cars without. They are REALLY good at picking out cars that the handler *thinks* has drugs in it or just wants to search.

On June 29th 2013, Gabriella Calhoun’s life changed forever. The night was warm and clear, and after partying with friends, Gabriella and her friends decided to go to their local neighborhood Denny’s to get a late night meal. Gabby is an honor student at Wiley College. She finished high school a year early and went to college a year before the rest of her cohort.

Sitting on the left side of Denny’s so they can have a view of the parking lot, her crew of 17, all high school graduates, witnessed a fight between two girls. As the group of college bound students were ordering their drinks, the cops were called.

When officers arrived on the scene, they entered the Denny’s and approached Gabriella’s table and asked if they had anything to do with the fight. A friend, who shall remain nameless, told the officers that they were not involved with the fight at all at which the cops left and went back outside.

The two girls who were fighting outside were allowed to go into the Denny’s to “clean themselves up.” One girl was previously maced by a police officer in the parking lot for acting unruly. When the two girls saw each other inside of Denny’s, they started to fight again. The cops rushed into the restaurant to break the fight up.

As the cops tried to clear Denny’s, they again approached Gabriella’s table, at which a close friend of hers told the cops they were not involved with the party that was fighting. The cops grabbed the nameless young man, (he wants his name protected out of fear of retaliation), and escorted him out of Denny’s. Gabriella followed them and grabbed his side. As she exited the Denny’s she felt a grip on her neck and arm and says that out of reaction, she tried to pull away.

What happened next was unimaginable. According to her friends, Gabriella was hit in the face with a night stick by a female officer and was knocked unconscious. When Gabriella finally gained consciousness, the Wiley College Student said, “I awoke spitting my teeth out on the ground.”

Gabriella then stated, “When I came to, the officer begin to choke me again. When I was finally able to talk, I asked the officer to please let me go because I have asthma, but she [the officer], said, ‘I don’t care if you have asthma. You were hitting my officer.’”

“Afterward, the officer kept saying over and over again, ‘how was your party’ as she held my face to the ground.”

The female cop then lifted the petite honor student off of the ground, at which her b*****s were exposed because the tube top shirt she was wearing had rolled down. She asked the officer if she could please pull up her shirt, but the officer told her to do it herself. She then walked Gabriella all the way from the front of the Denny’s to the back where the cop cars were.

    Spoiler: show
Gabriella was then sent to the precinct where she was booked on one charge of felony aggravated battery and two misdemeanors for resisting arrest.

“While at the jail, I received limited medical attention,” said Gabriella. “The doctors only gave me ointment and an icepack which I had to ask for.”

“I think this is racial profiling not only by the Bloomington police department but also by Denny’s,” stated Lynia Cooper, friend of the victim. “Nobody else in Denny’s had to leave except the African Americans in that area. The police didn’t hear us out and ultimately used cruel and unusual force on Gabby.”

Cooper added, “Might I add the police didn’t even arrest the females that were involved in the altercations.”

Your Black World tried to reach out to the Bloomington, IL police department, but they said they were unable to make an official statement because the case hasn’t gone to trial yet.

The entire incident left Gabriella terrified. “The whole situation is out of hand,” stated the frightened teen. “I don’t deserve this and now I hate to look in the mirror. When I look at what I use to look like to what I look like now, it hurts. I had the prettiest smile but now I have 3 fake teeth in my mouth. Nothing is the same. I have to train myself to talk with my new teeth.”

Civil rights activists are already trying to find out what happened to the student, but are seeking to hear the police department’s side of the story.

“I want to hear what the police have to say, since the burden of proof is on them,” said Dr. Boyce Watkins, who revealed the case of Kelly Williams-Bolar, the mother sent to jail for sending her kids to a school outside her district. ”But my father is a cop, so I know that her story is not inconceivable. Police beat law-abiding citizens for little things all the time, and regularly go outside the bounds of decency when exerting their authority.”

Dr. Watkins is meeting this week with the Revs. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton in Chicago, and says that he will get their inputs on the matter. Until then, the family is seeking answers and support from anyone willing to provide it. Watkins says that he is trying to figure out how a small woman required so much force to restrain, even if she was doing something wrong.

“This woman is the same size as one of my daughters,” said Dr. Watkins. ”Even if she were out of line, I can’t imagine someone having to smash her face with a billy club and knock her teeth out to get her under control.”

The victim’s mother, Montana Amy Calhoun, wants justice for her daughter. She is asking that anyone who can give information on resources for the family in the Illinois area, please reach out to them.
