Because cops never go into CYA mode when writing up the report. It's human nature to be bias when recounting events. I have personally given statements to cops and been involved in police incidents where I read the police report later. Many of the events in the report didn't actually happen as the officer wrote in the report. It happens more than you would like us to believe. In my case the inconsistencies were relatively harmless in that it did not change the outcome. Do not discount that the report and subsequent media statements could have been slightly different from actual events. Until we get the other side of the story from the guy that was shot, all we have is an incident where a police officer opened fire on a civilian. Of course he is going to justify his actions in the report. I would too.

Obviously if everything says this, we should believe that instead until we're sure.

No kidding. Whatever happened to innocent until guilty amirite? Let's wait until the guy wakes. Then we'll get both sides.

I'm sure he's going to say:
I had an argument with my wife and the last thing I shouted was, "Please send the cops after me so I can get myself shot!"

I would like to thank her for doing just that, because I was trying to commit suicide by cop but was too lazy to actually look for cops. Thank you, wifey.

Also, thank you, cops. Now that you've shot me for exiting my vehicle too abruptly for your liking, probably without even suspecting that you think I'm armed, I have seen the error of my ways. I will no longer be depressed because I have only one injury keeping me from being a firefighter. Thank you again, cops.

Believing anything that the cops say is your first mistake.

This is real life. Every police officer is a living, breathing human being that dies and can get hurt just like you.

When you pull up on a scene with a potentially dangerous combatant with pre-existing knowledge that the person may be armed and suicidal and you're around 15-25 yards away and the guy jumps out of their car with something in their hands and takes a shooting stance, why in the hell would you take that risk that it might not be a gun? What if it was a gun and he killed several officers before they killed him? Where's the justification in that? Are people suddenly not allowed to defend themselves? And why do you feel the guy was just trying to give up his identification when he took a shooting stance with an object in his hands? Must have some good binocular goggles on to see that the object wasn't a gun. Aggressive movements like that, especially if there's prior information that the guy could be armed is a great way to get shot. Period.

Bottom line here is Suicide By Cop. Happens all the time. Not exactly the ultimate cowards way out of taking your own life but it's pretty damn close. 100% justified shoot on the officers part.

All your posts lately are just justification. Do you really feel this much dissonance about your job?

Let's not pretend that suicide by cop isn't a thing.

Funny, that's the point I've been trying to get to you: it's not the movies. You're not the Last Action Hero. You're not surrounded by an army of Hans Grüber clones and Replicants, but by Joe the accountant, Trayvon the student and Jack the firefighter.
... and you're thinking about Backdraft now, aren't you?

If you view ordinary citizens as "potentially dangerous individuals" (everyone is potentially dangerous, especially to those of us that don't carry firearms) and you're ready to fire on a mere presumption, you're a liability to public safety, not an asset.

You ask us to empathise with the cops, but you can't even fathom the possibility that the cop might be lying to cover his own trigger-happy arse.
    And I don't mean diarrhea.

I thought cops are there to take the risk regular people aren't.

Ie, if some dude jumps out of a car in a gun stance the policeman shouldn't fire to kill the man on the off chance the policeman was saving his own life... the policeman should take the time to save THAT GUY'S life by taking a look first. And yeah, if it WAS a gun a policeman would be dead but isn't that part of the job?

I dunno, just my opinion of course but I thought cops are there to protect us at the cost of themselves

It's not even that risky of a job. http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshwc/cfoi/cfoi_revised10.pdf

It's about 4 times safer than being a farmer. That's why this whole "100% justified" bullshit is disgusting and needs to stop.

and no, they aren't there to take risks that you aren't. serve and protect isn't referring to citizens but rather the law.

^ Yeah, I was not sure why that comment was supposed to be funny? It alone speaks leaps and bounds on the status of Law Enforcement in this country.

Just protect and serve, in general. It's not like there's some law or part of the constitution that states "police shall protect and serve this and that."
