Buddy just got a ticket for not following a road control sign. Officer said he was going to give him the more expensive ticket for not following a stop sign instead gave him the cheaper one.

Buddy is sure he stopped, at most it was a rolling stop. Should he fight the ticket? What is the procedure? Btw, he lives in Vancouver.

If it were the U.S. he'd definitely be best off checking with a legal advice service to find out if it will affect his insurance or not if he just pays it. If not, then yeah just pay it. If it would, you'd want to get a diversion, which is more expensive in the short term but keeps it off your record. No idea if that applies in Canada or not, but yeah fighting it is generally the last resort here because it can get expensive.

I'm reminded of a couple more cool story bro er cool cop stories, though.

When I was ~16 I had a front wheel drive sports car, which means you can throw the back end out and if there's decent grip for the front you can just hit it and pull yourself out. So I did this thing where I pulled a very illegal turn, fishtailing into a little merging lane, then proceeded to speed, then pulled up next to some chick in a sports car and tried to get her to race... I got pulled over, cop gets me to come out and talk to him behind the car (I was barefoot too which is also illegal lol), gives me a short little lecture and sends me off with "making a left turn across a double yellow line" or some meaningless shit lol.

And then another time is kind of a douche and cool at the same time one... cops had a trap set up outside the edge of the city, in a spot where the speed limit is 40 for no damn reason on a bigass 2 lane road with shoulders a full lane wide and basically no houses or anything up on it. I was doing 51, so of course they pull me over... but I admitted it when he asked if I knew how fast I was going, so he said he appreciates my honesty and wrote it for 48, which I could just pay the basic fee for and not have it affect my insurance.

From what I understand it is his word against the cops. If the officer doesn't show up, I believe it is thrown out. There is an additional fine if my buddy were to lose to pay for court costs.

My buddy and I were livid at the cop. The girlfriends said to just pay it instead of fighting. It was 1030 pm on a Saturday night on a dead intersection. I understand him pulling him over. Could have gave a warning, but for such a minor ticket, a bit of resentment toward the police has grown.

A "rolling stop" is not a stop, your (his, hers, whatever) word isn't going to beat the cop's, and trying to fight a fine because you're pissed due to it being a small thing is just going to escalate your costs.

The link I gave you was the official report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. http://www.bls.gov/iif/oshwc/cfoi/cfoi_revised10.pdf

It VERY clearly gives the rate of death per 100,00 workers (in that particular field)

So if the rate is 20 per 100k, it doesn't matter if there were 100k workers in that field, or 10 million. 20 out of 100k on average died while engaged in that occupation. This rate is what lets you know the relative risk of an occupation.

Here's the Bureau of Labor Statistics "Fatalities to Law Enforcement Officers and Firefighters, 1992-97" official report. http://www.bls.gov/opub/cwc/archive/summer1999art1.pdf
Look at the chart in it.

If somebody can look at this and tell me I'm reading it wrongly (and how), I'll gladly concede and admit I was wrong.

Here's another report from 1997(again from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.). Law enforcement must have had a bad year that year because the rate is higher, but they still didn't make the top 10.

All that said, you're actually a great poster here and I love the insight into your profession that you give.

I just like to keep things factual, but like I said if somebody can tell me how I'm reading this wrong I'm happy to have made a mistake.

You're not wrong and I wasn't disputing that more people die per year farming than in law enforcement work. I was saying that given the sample, of course you'll have a bigger fatality rate for the bigger sample because, its bigger. I said double the LEO's to make the sample bigger to give it a better comparison.

In the end, "danger" in terms of death from acts that are unsafe don't undermined the fact that deaths and incidents of violence against police officers are more prevailing. You count danger as death, and I'm saying danger is merely existing in the LEO world. Seems to me that the only thing dangerous in farming is negligence. The most dangerous thing in Law Enforcement is other humans.

Danger in my eyes isn't dying. I've already come to terms with it and will embrace it when it happens. Danger to me is getting the shit kicked out of me leaving me scarred or maimed for life or someone I know or love going through the same thing. Danger is getting stabbed or shot but not the dying part, its the circumstances leading to it. Dunno if that makes sense but that's what I got lol

Rates don't vary with sample size. The average deviation of the observed rate from the true rate varies with sample size, but the rate itself doesn't vary (aka, it gets more accurate the higher your N gets). If you sample literally every member of the population, then you get a perfectly accurate rate (in a perfect world). That is what they did here.

You're comparing deaths per farmer to deaths per police officer. So no, the fact that there are more farmers than police officers doesn't matter at all here. It affects the total number of deaths from each group, but not the rate.

Thank you, I started to do another reply to explain this. His talk of sample size and total number of people in a job is so confusing when it has nothing to do with the rate of fatalities by occupation.

I'll give you all of that. I'm probably missing some of the "larger" picture by only looking at fatalities.

I wasn't making the comparison to be a dick or anything. Wasn't my intention. It wasn't a justifying scenario, just wanted you to think more outside the box. Unfortunately you're too damn smart for your own good and I used a terrible method to get the point across and I apologize.

DETROIT (WJBK) - A second officer, a 17-year veteran from Saint Clair Shores, has been arrested accused of robbing unsuspecting drivers at gunpoint.

On Saturday, Fox 2 also reported a Detroit police sergeant was arrested at the 12th precinct. A tip sent to Fox 2 helped lead to the arrests. We forwarded a photo from one scene to Detroit Police. They recognized one of their own in the photo.

More information is expected Monday during a press conference scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m.

The first incident took place at a Citgo gas station near French and I-94 on Detroit's east side last Sunday. The clerk says two white men in a black Ford F-150 with police lights allegedly pistol-whipped customers pumping gas. The men stole cash and cell phones from their victims. A warning went out to be on the lookout for "fake cops" but it turns out those officers were not fake after all. It appears the sergeant in this case was driving his personal vehicle.

Kind of looks like they were trying to do an anti-prostitution sting. Not sure how that particular law got thrown in there but that's a pretty big stretch to make charges stick. Not sure how they thought that was going to fly considering the law was defunct for over a decade. Even still, definitely looks like they were targeting a particular group of people. Lawsuit en-route.

looked back a couple of pages, didn't see this posted.

Hicks, 51, was arrested in May 2012 after veering off Interstate 275 in Tampa. He was booked into jail without a medical screening, rambling incoherently and dragging his left leg.

More than a full day passed — during much of which Hicks lay on the floor of his cell or tried to crawl using only his right limbs — before he was taken to Tampa General Hospital and immediately diagnosed with a severe ischemic stroke. He slipped into a coma and died months later.

    Florida etc.

    http://www.ibtimes.com/roy-middleton...es-car-1363207

Florida law enforcement officials are investigating reports that an unarmed man was shot by police in his own driveway while retrieving cigarettes from his mother’s car.

Roy Middleton, a 60-year-old resident of Warrington, Fla., was shot in the leg by Escambia County sheriff’s deputies on Saturday, the Pensacola News Journal reports. The shooting reportedly took place on Middleton’s driveway, as he attempted to retrieve a cigarette from his mother’s car. That’s when police arrived on the scene, investigating a report of a possible vehicle break-in, Fox 10 reports.

Middleton claims that he was searching the car for a loose cigarette when he heard someone say, “Get your hands where I can see them,” the News Journal reports. The 60-year-old initially thought a neighbor was playing a joke on him, but he turned to find Escambia County police standing with guns drawn.

The 60-year-old says that he exited his mother’s car with his arms raised, but police opened fire anyway, the News Journal reports. “It was like a firing squad,” Middleton told the paper. “Bullets were flying everywhere.”

Middleton remains in a local hospital and reportedly faces several weeks of recovery. “I’m just glad they didn’t hit me here or here,” he told the News Journal, indicating his chest and head. “My mother’s car is full of bullet holes though.”

“He was just coming home like he usually does. I don’t understand why they had to use so much force under the situation,” Middleton’s mother, Ceola Walker, told Fox 10. “I don’t understand how they could fire so many shots at him. He wasn’t resisting or anything and he was at his own house.”

Middleton added that he doesn’t understand what caused officers to perceive him as a threat and shoot him. “Even if they thought the car was stolen, all they had to do was run the license plate,” Middleton told the News Journal. “They would have seen that that car belonged there.”

The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office declined to comment on the Middleton shooting Saturday, but the incident is currently being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, the News Journal reports. The deputies responsible for shooting Middleton have reportedly been placed on administrative leave.
Guilty of being black in florida etc. Also they are on paid administrative leave.
