If they require you to do that at work, you should.

As does every job, unless your job is being homeless and jobless. Let's start the revolution and lobby to get paid from the time I get up until the time I go to sleep. I can't come to work and be productive if I don't do my laundry, shave & shower, eat properly, and get gas. Why shouldn't I get paid for all that?

Maintaining the weapon I can understand a bit because it is also a safety issue for the officer if the weapon is not properly maintained, but it's certainly a stretch. And I'm willing to bet most stations either have their own mechanics or a mechanic they have a contract with that maintains the car. Taking the trash you made out of your car and parking it does not count as maintaining the car in my opinion.

Ok, so they don't. When they start requiring you to show up 30 minutes early, to do work that they aren't paying you for, you should probably demand to be paid for it.

The part in the article about getting dressed is very questionable. However, anything required to be done as a part of your job needs to be paid for. If the officer is required to put on safety gear, tool belt, etc. after he arrives, that is part of the job. If he is lazy as fuck and just wants to wake up late and get dressed in the locker room at work, then he can fuck off.

Yes, exactly. If they show up at the time they are supposed to start working, they are late. There is no possible way for them to not be late, because they are required to do stuff after they get there, which they cannot even do at home if they wanted to, before they "start working". That's the problem. If you're expected to be dressed for work before arriving, then you shouldn't be paid for it. But if you are expected to show up NOT dressed, and then get dressed while at work, then it's part of your work, and it should be paid.

I worked for a cable company, and we were supposed to stay on the clock for any cleaning of our vans, organizing equipment, and things like that. We had lockers for the cable boxes and modems and the like, and anything we did with those was on the clock. We needed to be at the shop by 7, in our uniform, but anything else we needed to do before we went out and did jobs, or needed to do before we went home, was on the clock.

I think a lot of that is safety equipment, including your vest which some agencies don't let you take it home with you. You get it issued to you when you arrive and it has to be worn underneath your uniform.

Could just be my department, but there are a lot of idiots that don't wear a vest anyways.

Also not gonna side with having to clean out the car, be glad you have a take home and don't have to waste your own money on gas

Take the 5 mins to throw away your crap.

I always dress before arrival to work. Just part of my routine. Wake up, breakfast, newspaper or TV news, shower, shave, uniform. I keep some uniforms in my locker at work just in case something happens but everything else I take home. I say the process takes about 15 minutes including rig and vest. I can see if you don't do what I do and wear the uniform home then you should get paid but... Does that mean I should get paid to put it on at home too? Hmmm.

I love plainclothes rotations, though. Takes MUCH longer to dress as most of the casual clothes are custom made to hide shit. Most of the clothes have become part of my normal wardrobe now that I don't even have regular clothes anymore. Before I would bum around in uniform pants if I was lazy. Pain in the ass transferring keys, wallet, knife, gun, belt, all that shit between pants every day.

This is so true! From the very few times I've worked plain clothes during large events, it took me a lot longer to get ready for work. In the end, I just always rock a red Sox jersey while working out of uniform lol

What I wouldn't give to be able to rock a sports jersey. They don't want us wearing anything like that anymore after one UC lady decided she was gonna wear a Cowboys jacket to a drug deal. Who would have thought drug dealers are so passionate about their home team (Washington Redskins) that they would try to rob and stab a 20 something white chick who looked more like an unhealthy middle-school girl than a UC?

I would have stabbed both of you. Cowboys and Red Sox, and cops. I couldn't hate you more.

I'm not usually one to defend cops but fuck that if a nutjob had a knife I'd do the same thing. why risk bodily injury when you have a dog?

Well they did flash bang him and send the dog on him as he was packing up. THEN they unloaded on him (with real bullets), THEN they shot him with the bean bags (this would make a good far side comic if it weren't so sad), THEN they sicked the dog on him again....You really think they handled the situation correctly?

It would have been totally fine to beanbag him, I mean they had them obviously since they used them, so it's not like "Well they should have tazed him!...but there were no tazers" type shit. The fact they took him down, then proceeded to just pelt him with bean bags and sick the dog on him though, way above what was called for. Obviously they didn't want to approach him when he still had the knife, due to his history, but I think using live ammo on him (I'm assuming that 1st shot was a real bullet) at the start was uncalled for as he was clearly far enough away to not pose an immediate danger and was not advancing rapidly on them.

If the story is true about about the officer being a personal friend, then it is pretty fucked up.

However to resist because you claim its a unlawful arrest is a bad move, your gonna end up arrested anyways. Not to mention I don't think I've arrested someone yet that agreed with me that it was a lawful arrest.

*edit I will admit I haven't watched the video yet, won't load on my phone. Only read the article
