They are above the law and they know it. It also is pretty god damned telling that you come in this thread and acknowledge your own anger problems and talk to other people on here like children. Pretty much sums up cops in general to me. High school bullies that never grew up.

For perspective though, I am not a people person. I can't stand the majority of humanity. It is why I was a sniper in the army and work with animals now. I generally feel that most of humanity doesn't deserve the air they breathe. That is just my take on it from a man who's spent most of his life in the shittiest parts of the world. (both in the military and out of it) These are also reasons I'm not a cop. I would make a terrible cop. The problem is most people can't be honest with themselves and do that. They enjoy power over other people. So yeah, fuck those guys.

As to your asinine question about tearing up the streets...uh, yeah? That and generally being not build for the width of our roads, weight limits of our bridges, type of asphalt on the roads, and turning radius provided by our intersections they are generally the most unsafe thing you could drive short of a god damned tank. How about you tell me one good reason you need that motherfucker besides some wackjob in the woods shooting at police? (hint: that's not a reason fuckwad)
You of all people should know then that they're not driving tanks. I don't see tracks on the vehicle Boyee posted, just regular tires. Show me some data and proof that the special vehicles police drive tear up the roads. You can't, you know why? These vehicles sit in depot for months without use, or the special response group assigned to it drives it around a parking lot during practice. They don't regularly patrol in those vehicles, and it's silly to think they're doing any sort of damage to a frickin road.

Hell, we didn't even use all our vehicles in Afghanistan for YEARS. Depot at Eggers had over 20,000 miscellaneous surplus shit that we could have been using at outposts for armor or have the 10th Mountain use them on recon. But no, the shit just sat there.

Listen, I know you're angry, but open your fucking eyes. Just because you're a loner (fuck sniping btw), doesn't mean you need to clutch to stupid cynical BS. I was just a fucking grunt and I knew there were things over my head that I knew was bullshit, but at least I had sense enough not to make shit up in my head to unnecessarily get angry. Besides, if you really did serve, get angry at the jackasses who dress up to fuck with people or those dumbasses who wear the "I support Darren Wilson" bracelets. Don't get mad at the very necessary and cozy armored vehicles.

@ everyone calling cops highschool dropouts and people that just want power over people...

Many places require degrees, some even bachelor's degrees, to be cops unless you have 4 years active duty... Not to mention, cops in many places pull in 100-150k a year.

They aren't in it for the power or cause they were bad in school, they are in it cause it pays insane and has some of the best benefits of any job on the country, and typically all you have to do to become one is be somebodies son or have served.

That last part is why there are so many problem cops, or problems with policing in this country. Same goes for firefighters just to less noticeable degree.

OH, you pumped fuel in Iraq? You're totally more qualified to be a cop or fireman, without any training in those areas, then any person in the states including volunteer fireman that have been active firemen for 15 years. System is broken, vets deserve jobs, not preference over more qualified people. I have no clue why vets are hired with priority as firemen, then have to be taught and trained to be firemen, when there are hundreds of thousands of trained experienced volunteers that have been doing it forever.

I WISH I made that kind of cake working here. Hell, I'm lucky to get over 60k if I can snatch some overtime here and there. The only extra income I bring in is working club zone assignments and sometimes going to court. Anything that's not justified by a lieutenant or commander in terms of overtime is paid out in comp.

That's gotta be in upstate New York or they don't have a budget. We don't even appear for court anymore on traffic crimes due to the budget.

Most of NJ. Big budgets, big salary (outside of cities/shit areas).

I want to stop and reiterate something here, since the entirety of BG's self righteous public servants has come in here now. I don't think all cops are bad. I think a large majority of them are bullies, take advantage of their power, and have zero accountability. I also think it is a job that pulls in men with aggressive personalities and tempers and gives them power with less accountability than if they had worked at wal mart.

Neph, I also didn't say tank, I used it as a ridiculous counter to show how silly those vehicles are...'cause they are everything short of a tank minus the treads. It doesn't surprise me that you were a grunt. Most grunts I know went on to be dick cops back in their hometowns. Your justification of that idiotic vehicle is that some dude in the woods is shooting at you still? Hey guess what? That vehicle isn't helping dipshit.

Here's a video maybe even you might get about the vehicles...

This part makes me feel like you don't know any cops at all personally. And you might, you might know quite a few, or even a ton, and they might all be like that and I understand that and it's your sample size and I'm sorry if I am misjudging. I can see that being the case for a lot of people here, and true for many people due to whats out there on the internet. But I also feel that my sample size of the 300 or so police officers I know is the polar opposite of that, and the screening process is utterly brutal to avoid things like that. The personality/psyche part of the application is roughly 5000 questions and takes about 8-12 hours to complete alone, and thats before the one-on-one or panel time. It definitely weeds out people. Don't get me wrong, some are jerks, but not in the ways talked about or shown through the videos I've seen. And many are passive dudes, great to hangout with and great family guys.

However, my sample size is also vastly different from Nephs as well which is obvious to me through his posts regarding budgets and salaries. The cops here have huge budgets, the tax payers love them and take care of them, and they are highly overpaid. It is nearly impossible to get the job they have, and with such a high salary, the process to weed out the aggressive and shitty people really works. They don't hire often, and when they do, its 2-5 people out of thousands.

I'd say I know 100~ cops personally...probably another 300 or so just by name and rep. I do some bodyguard work and personal security stuff still in my spare time to pick up extra cash and am forced to interact with them in that way. I don't know many/(any?) that make anywhere near what kind of money you're talking. Most of the guys that I know around me (I live in northern Alabama right now) make less than 40k a year. Almost all of them are ex military, mostly marines. I do have contacts in other cities in the country that make pretty good money, (60-100k) but they also work insane shifts that have them pulling 90 hrs a week.

Maybe the area, salaries, and weeding out process is where the differences come in from what I deal with and what you guys deal with.

Probably the area Boyiee. When I got hired 5 years ago, before factoring in overtime, a top step deputy sheriff only made a few bucks more an hour than I did. To offset that though, they did have a superior benefits and retirement package versus me. The pay spread has increased since then as the rate of pay for a entry level IT person remained stagnant but deputy pay increased. My dad when he started about 38 years ago (retired a few years ago) told me you went in for the benefits. The pay was not much higher than a janitor supervisor when he started in the 70's.

    Damn.

This is descended sorting, with Chief/Cap/Lt/Sgt at the front, these are all ptl's (I think before overtime even...)

I went pretty far into the ptl to post that, there are several pages of them before it. I think Sgt starts around 139k. The jumps after Sgt are insane, and in the 160's 170's and 180's. Sgt isn't really much of an increase and many guys don't even bother taking the test.

    edit: here's where sgt's start

Are your Sergeants Salary or hourly? For us they are hourly and thus can get overtime, so you don't see too many people push for that Lieutenant promotion due to it being salary and losing the overtime. Your base start though on there appears to be about 15-20k more a year than what our deputies get yearly before overtime at top pay grade.

Sounds like /k/ incarnate. And I dunno about you but catching anyone short of the Pope banging my wife would have their life forfeit. Just sucks it was a cop and spawning the immediate DEFCON BLUE responses which are rather amusing thus far.

It would have been the same for anyone. I geared up four times within the past six months for shooters doing similar acts of violence. Didn't know any of the victims and didn't know cops were involved in one until after Aaron Alexis was dead.

To give noble some backup on the experience that most cops are dicks, there's a reason for it. It's not that they're naturally dicks, or dicks in all situations. It's that the situations their job puts them in increases their dickishness for those situations. Here's a good TED talk about that kind of thing happening very, very quickly to otherwise normal well-adjusted individuals.
