Every single article states it "can" happen, but there's no scientific proof that a Taser shock has directly caused a person to die or defib. You should actually read the articles and compare them to the actual causes of death. The device doesn't work that way. It's a contributing factor, but standalone, it still hasn't killed anyone yet.

    http://www.taser.com/research-and-sa...ce-and-medical

Leading contributor to death in Taser use: irregular heart defects due to obesity or heart disease.

The studies are extensive. There's always the inherent risk that the device -can- kill you, but by itself, it has not yet killed a person with JUST it's use alone.

    http://www.taser.com/research-and-sa...search-library

All of the lawsuits and litigation that have stemmed from Taser use has been improper usage and violation of protocol.

Yes, yes. We're arguing semantics. Touche`, I'll concede.

Still the safest method to take a suspect in to custody with minimal force by far.

Sadly the use of force to the average citizen does not mean the same use of force used by police. But yeah, shitty situation, but at least she didn't get choked to fucking death, quite literally.

That's the problem. Officers are only trained in so much hand to hand control tactics that eventually, it can turn in to a brawl. Trying to control a flexible and raging female is like trying to squish a plate of jello in to medicine bottle. People don't understand that, and don't realize that people who resist arrest can escalate to the point where empty hand control techniques just don't work. I don't care who or what you are, or what type of training you have (door bouncers are the worst, who say they can control anyone), but try to do that without injuring or harming that person.

Taser uses create predictable and generally safe results with oftentimes little to no damage to the subject. That's why the response of Tasers are so low on the Use of Force continuum. Pulling away or walking away and not following commands generally all fall under active resistance, which the response can be Taser use, Pepper Spray, Impact Weapon and Closed fist strikes to arms and legs (you see how bad THAT looks?), takedowns, all of which can be used during Active resistance.

You know how you get a plate of jello into a medicine bottle? You use a funnel. or a turkey baster. or any tool designed for the job, instead of trying to brute force it in there.

You got a mouth. you got a face. you can try first using words (and i'm not talking barking orders here, i'm talking about trying to calm people down instead of making the situation worse by yelling louder at them when they don't comply). Words are tools too. Instead of just tasering a person who's not complying, why not first try to calm them down properly, build trust instead of riling them up and causing them to become even more stubborn? if they still refuse to comply, why not warn them that you will start using force and explain why? If they still refuse to comply, then yes, tasering is probably the way to go. But how you encounter people, your body language, your facial expressions, how you talk to them and the tone you take all affect how they're going to react in the first place, and how willing they will be to cooperate in the first place. those are the first tools you should be using in your disposal when things start heading south, not your tasers, not your guns, and not your fists. otherwise you're not a cop, you're just a bully abusing his power, or a coward who's more willing to risk the lives of those he encounters before your own. (this is not a personal attack; this is how you will be perceived by those you interact with and those you watch you.)

Sorry for the incoming super serial post.

I can't comment too much on the video cause I don't want to spend like 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back watching an elderly person be tazered, but isn't the cop hate a little excessive here? Or are you guys just seeing how far you can push Neph until he packs his car full of riot gear and hunts you guys down? Yah there are some, sometimes alarming amounts of, bad seeds in law enforcement and their policies don't always make sense to us and I think there should probably be a few more steps between "Ask Elderly women to stop" and "Taser her bro", but these aren't the majority of situations, and how many cop recordings do you think people just delete cause nothing interesting happened? These types of videos are the huuuuuuugest example of biased reporting. For every 1 situation like this there are likely hundreds to thousands of police doing their job, helping people, or other basic things that follow the training they're given and it actually working. Those videos? no one uploads those...

I have to agree with Neph on the point where Taser more or less have a predictable outcome, unless you're fucking this guy., where as Hand-to-hand restraining just... it can go south quick, and if the perp is more aggressive than you previously thought he's now within arms range of your firearm. Sure they're trained for that, but in most cases I'd like to believe the taser is the safest and most non-lethal route with less room for error and a more controllable outcome. This probably doesn't apply to this particular example (cause I don't see an elderly women going Bruce Lee on these cops), but more in general. I have no defense for the video as again, I don't need the mental image of an old woman being tased face first into the ground in my head.

But this is the part I'm most disappointed on, and its not specific to this video. The joke posts of stuff like "but guyz, give the cops benefit of the doubt" are almost hypocritical cause its the same people who dont even do fact checking half the time and just assume the cop is always in the wrong... That and I too often see some Anita Sarks level of cherry picking for examples of bad cops just to "prove" a point. "Hey guys, I googled "dumb cops" and there were over 100 examples! All cops are brute force high-school drop out bullies! I even found this "study" to prove it too!". I get that, and sorry neph, that Neph has a way of defending police with the adamant will of a "Paladin uses cover on Police force", and to some people that can be really really annoying... but I mean, wouldn't you defend an industry/job you worked for if it was the constant target of negative criticism and was always painted negatively with a very wide and undiscriminating brush? I'd like to think I would.

    Spoiler: show
disclaimer: i'm well aware this thread is literally designed for posting stupid/excessive/hilarious things cops do, I'm not so much touching on that point as I am the people who actually believes that this A) Represents the majority/all of cops, and B) the fallout of people from Fergusson thread carrying their hate onto Neph here as well)

I actually enjoy this thread and have laughed/enjoyed many a post from it

All of the examples of verbals you mentioned were done prior to them using the Taser. The video's never show the 10 - 30 minutes of arguing, or telling people to back off, or telling them to calm down, whatever. No, I can't talk to you while I'm in the middle of an investigation or handling something. And no, I am not obligated to tell you if X Y or Z is your best friends kid.

And granted, there are some examples of police flying off the handle at people. I can't speak for all of them and can't defend all of them. Keep in mind that in the heat of the moment, especially if I just chased someone, almost got killed in a vehicle pursuit, possibly got shot at, wrestled with someone, or I just got the shit kicked out of me, I may or may not be in the right state of mind to sit back and calmly answer questions from you, or sometimes even be able to formulate coherent sentences.

So, it's an (empty) apology from me, a cop, apologizing that sometimes I'm a dick. I'm sorry that I have to take verbal abuse daily and non-compliant resistance regularly because I'm held to a higher professional standard and have to have thick skin, yet it's a huge deal and a crime against humanity if I tell you to "Shut up".

I'm not sorry that I have to take you to jail. That's your problem and your mistake, not mine. I have to deal with you after, but I didn't make the choice for you to break the law, you did. I might feel sorry for you depending on the circumstances, but I'm not allowed to let you know that, and yet I'm the dick because I have to do my job.

I'm sorry that I'm paranoid as fuck after watching hundreds of videos and reading thousands of stories of people in my profession getting shot, robbed, raped, beaten, killed, assaulted, have people show up to their house because public servants addresses are public record and people like to show up to their houses to threaten them and their families, or make attempts on their families.

And most of all, I’m sorry that I might be a little pissed off when people say “That’s the job you signed up for.” Which is horseshit .

Additionally, I would like to see someone try to use a funnel or a turkey baster to get jello to do anything other than just sit there.

Believe it or not, I don't hate anyone here enough to want to try to do that. We were all brought together by one thing that we all had in common: FFXI. I can't get mad at a fellow nerd gamer. In fact, while I may disagree with some of these guys and want to punch them in the head for being assholes, I would rather buy them a beer and talk about gaming or real life that has nothing to do with the police.

I think we could all get along with that.

If someone is resisting no one expects you to be gentle. You don't have to try to avoid hurting them. But i think you should generally try to avoid doing things that can lead to their death unless absolutely necessary.

Its a trap, you can't resist abusing your power, the studies say so.

I think we could all get along with that.
Yah... needs more Vanafest, big ol' get together. Cosplay included. I'll come as Botulus Rex since all I'd have to do is paint myself red and find a tiny crown. Or we can go to a bar and I'll still just paint myself red and wear a tiny crown... sports.

No offense, but i would just like to point out to you that when you work in customer service, you're constantly having to offer empty apologies and endure verbal abuse daily, and your ass is fired if you don't pretend to be nice. (believe me, i know just how hard it is to resist screaming "SHUT UP!" at people bitching at you daily.) But, again, it's words. even if someone's being disrespectful, violence isn't the proper response, trying to deescalate the situation is. but i agree, if that doesn't work and things start to turn violent, taze away~ But only the minimum amount of force needed to subjugate them. past that, its no longer restraining them, its abusing them, regardless of what crimes they may or may not have committed.

Well, I shouldn't put my hands on them at all in that case. People have ended up perfectly dead tangling with the police without a weapon being involved.

I actually don't work in customer service. My job, primarily, is to investigate crime and bring offenders to justice. Suspects are not customers, they're suspects. It might be a part of my job to have some customer service skills, but I'm not selling you a product and don't have to endure abuse. The beauty of being the police is I can walk away from people who cuss me out and refuse to provide them my service.

We aren't trained to use minimal force, either. You meet force with force unless a technique lower on the continuum can control the situation, but it's not mandatory. You use enough force to stop the threat. The woman resisting arrest, walking away, and her subsequent Tazing are all legally acceptable practices according to the policy and the law. You can argue morals and "what's right" all you want. Until I see you trying to control subjects every day to the point where you can do it with only your verbals, you don't have much room to talk.
