"Today, we had to let go of some of the great talent at En Masse Entertainment. While a tough decision, it was necessary as we prepare for the next chapter of our business. TERA has been a great launch for us, and we are committed to you guys, our loyal players. We’re taking measures to align the needs of our business to continue supporting TERA and preparing for our future. We are working with those affected by this transition, including offering assistance on new prospects within the industry/area. Rest assured this doesn’t change our plans for awesome game updates and support, including the huge Argon Queen update later this month. "

This is actually somewhat surprising to me. I know the game's population seems to be going down, but with chronoscroll sales and all the vanity items, I figured they would still be doing fine.

The scrolls barely mean anything if there is a huge drop off in population. BHS has to weigh between the P2P and F2P model and when they should make the switch. I don't mind the vanity items, but I really wish they would of gone the FFXI/FFXIV route of injecting content and events into the game with permanent items. Instead they heavily focused with the cash shop. Instead of having events with a back-story as well as events that welcomed community involvement we have the cash shop with an insta-win button with your credit or debit card; no community involvement involved.

A P2P game that heavily uses the cash shop with so many items was a sour note for many. I don't care either way, but many folks on the official forums were against it. Was that the #1 reason for the drop off, no of course not... there are many other reasons, but this was one that was always debated.

Another way to put it... look at this video from 6:14 to 8:14

when it comes to the heavily used cash shop items with the P2P business model.

Oh, I definitely agree with the cash shop. Earning items is definitely more satisfying then just buying them. It just seemed like a lot of people were buying them and I figured it would be helping them a lot. I definitely could see the negative effect it has as well on people that don't support that type of deal.

I'm not super surprised really. The leveling in TERA Is by far the best I have ever had, even though the quests were terribly stagnant and boring, the combat and graphics were enough to draw you in and never let you go (also skimpy armor is a plus), it's a shame there was really nothing to do at end game other then grind against the RNG wheel. I mean it was fine for a few weeks, doing some of the dailies, grinding BT/FoK and maybe LoT/ET if you could find a group who would go there...but then it just wore on you.

I expect them to get a little surge in subs when Battlegrounds and the new patch content all hit though, I would like to see what team based objective pvp looks like in that game..but they need to remove that stupid reflect damage stat.

These days its hard to say what is "normal" adjustment or what is "ship is sinking!" with such a brief announcement with little info.

I think the big question is "when"? "When?" for everything. Now don't get me wrong; this game is no SW, and I had a ton of fun with every class I played in TERA, but there -are- some similarities to SW's launch (and i don't call it by its -real- name, because it's just that: Star Wars; little chapter titles are irrelevant).

    1) Both games launched without all of the now-mandatory features that should be in a game, day 1. TERA did a bit better by having more standard features, and by even trying to gloss up a few shoddy areas, like making a new tutorial area, but was still lacking for a 2012 launch game. Consequently, both games are still, today, spending time trying to implement these types of features into the game. SW can still barely get the UI options right, for example, while TERA somehow launched without a simple battleground system.

    2) Both games had enough pre-launch hype for many players to want to "race to the finish" and experience end-game, of which both games failed miserably. People rushed for different reasons - SW to get more delicious plot, and TERA because many had already played the K-version or wanted to beat the rush for meaningful PVP dominance - but the end result was the same; a lot of grinding the same stuff at the end.

    3) Both games either lied about or failed to skip the PR on their promises for PVP. Most BGers left because the PVP flopped, and the PVP flopped because we got a fraction of what we were told we were getting. Sure, the PVP at its core is still enjoyable; have someone stun a squishy target while I overcharge and one-shot the fucker for great justice, but for all of the lies about the GVG system and the shitty hub immunity, I don't even have to go into the rest of it.

    4) Both are murky when it comes to future content. Do we have any sort of reliable roadmap for the next 12 months in terms of content for either game? Not really, and that's not a good thing in today's fairly-transparent MMO world. TERA has it rougher because even if we look to Korea (not that they're terribly farther ahead in terms of actual, pure content), we have to wait for them to get it and mess with it before it comes back 'round to us.

I didn't mind spending the money on TERA because it was a cool game and I got to play with cool people, but I didn't expect for the BG shell - big, bad BG, who had hundreds of people in it - to be empty so soon. I didn't expect myself to be gone; I'm not that hard to please, but I do need a bit more than Screenshots (can fap to hotter stuff) and delicious combat (it is still delicious, but I can settle for the little brother in GW2's combat system).

I'd have rather they kept those people on and had them work in different areas, still helping the game, but we know that's not how the business works. Hopefully we'll get some timetables or something (not like Aions's 2.0 or 3.0 timetables that everyone bashes the second they announce them!) to help drum up interest.

The good news is that everyone still playing right now is pretty much playing for free for the next few months, so kudos to all of you hard workers.

Korean news is reporting that EME laid off 25% of its staff (20 out of 80 staff members) due to not hitting their target of 20 million dollars profit in NA. Speculation is that BHS is restructuring EME to make way for FTP. When asked a representative from BHS; their response was "No comment".

My thoughts on TERA aside, it's a little disappointing to hear that if it's true. EME did a pretty damn good job on the PR front for supplying lots of news, media, and videos to try to garner player interest leading up to OBT and launch. More than I expected from the average MMO.

PR can't save a game, though, and this is why I dislike PR. I understand why businesses have PR departments, surely, but I'm never surprised when PR manages to piss off more people than anything, especially when they sell subs and boxes on smoke and mirrors.

Sad news all around, though. The game did a lot right, but no pure Korean game will ever fly in the states until they essentially take all of the bad Korean out of the gameplay and leave nothing but the good Korean (models, innovative combat or fighting mechanics) to remain.

I would say EME handled TERA far better then I have ever seen NCsoft do when porting any Korean game to the US. Granted EME fucked up in a few key areas which is why the game did not take off so fast, that and GW2 being so close is another bad timing issue.

Tera would have faired far better and probably would have launched fully completed if it wasn't for the legal fees/troubles. Though if they didn't exist; that means it wasn't stolen and ncsoft would have released us a steaming pile of shit anyways.

I dunno how the legal troubles interfered with the lack of content that the NAs and Koreans have, but yeah, I wish it would have fared better, or at least kept me playing longer. That was about 2 months... ugh.

I have no idea what the legal troubles has to do with anything. Maybe you don't know how much more incomplete the Korean and Japanese launch were, but it's clear they keep thinking they have enough to launch, when they really don't. Just gotta suck it up and wait for some expos.

Don't listen to Pilfer or Armell. They got +10 in 10 tries exactly each.
