I see a lot of people thinking "useless major" means "useless subject" and getting mad.

A lot of those majors are considered worthless because you could major in something more generalized, while still studying your specific interest, and have more opportunities available while missing out on nothing.

Even with the shittiest degree, you can get an entry level government job and get a pension or become an Engrish teacher over seas.

i only know maybe 3 or 4 people that work in the field that their degree was in. shit my cousin makes 3k a week and his degree was in theater lighting or some shit.

Graphic design is on that list because it's a VICIOUS competition to get a job as a graphic designer-- at a professional establishment, anyway. Also, getting the degree is also a GIGANTIC PAIN IN THE ASS.

Another reason why artistic majors aren't that great of an idea-- most jobs associated with art don't give a shit about your degree. For example, if you're trying to be a concept artist the most important thing you need is a great portfolio of your art. That's it. They don't care if you a degree or not. Just as long as you can do the art work.

This is why I don't plan on getting a degree. I'm only going to college to sharpen my artistic skills and take amusing classes. Don't really need or care to get an associates or whatever. I just mostly need practice and human interaction because I need to get outside more often. x.x; Oh, and money from the grants/loans and such is useful for buying new materials and whatnot.

Couldn't agree more with the pain in the ass thing. I have a month to go until i finish my third and final year in a graphic design degree. It's been fun but aged me by 30 years.

You are certainly right about how most employers aren't fussed about the degree and focus on the portfolio, however the main point of the degree is to build up a portfolio. In addition continuos feed back helps to develop work and ideas that you yourself would struggle to do. Also the constant deadlines force you to do work (which i should probably be doing instead of surfing bg.....). You could argue that a self motivated person could set their own deadlines outside of a degree, that is true.

One thing degree does encourage is the interaction within other people focusing around work.

I don't think its "have a degree or forget it", but i do think they can help, despite the ridiculous fees we have to pay in the UK.
