Had a pretty heated debate in one of my classes today.

So, the topic today was "Would it be consistent with our 'moral principles' to give parents the option of euthanizing newborns with birth defects that would consign them to a life of pain, disability, and suffering?"

As expected, everyone had an opinion, and a massive shit fest ensued here some of the people had to be asked to leave the class, shit was funny. On a serious note, BG how do you guys feel on the subject, no this isn't for an assignment I have or anything, I'm just genuinely curious as to your opinions, let's try to limit the trolling also ^^.

Shit is situational. Depends on what disability or defect. It would be a horrible and difficult decision to make.

    It's just a late abortion.

    same stance as abortion:

would I do it? no. Would I judge others that did it as long as it's not ridiculous (aka euthanized for blue eyes)? no.

I'd abort it quickly. It takes a lot of dedication to care for someone with developmental disabilities. It's really a life-long commitment. Not to say that all kids aren't, but most all are pretty self sufficient by 25.

Well, if it was a case of something like harlequin ichthyosis then yeah, I would consider it. It really depends on the disease and the severity of it...

I'm gonna go with... no in ~95% of the cases. I mean, would Down Syndrome count as a disease of suffering and disability? It depends, also a good read from reddit on a, mostly, similar subject.

Once you getting into euthanizing babies that have downs, autism, etc you're going down a slippery slope of Gattaca coming to fruition. "Suffering horribly" is imo the key factor here. This discussion should never be about easing the suffering of the parents.

No. Most things can be detected before the baby even gets out of the first trimester. I'm sorry but THIS is killing someone.

Or what us liberal heathens like to call a hi-score abortion.

Nobody is disputing that. The question is would you do this if your child was doomed to a life of constant pain and suffering due to a medical condition. Quality of life is a big thing. I watched my Dad waste away for over two years before dying of cancer. He was in horrendous pain every day. If I could have spared him from going through that at any point I would have. That being said I would consider doing this if I knew my child had nothing but a lifetime of pain and agony ahead of it.

So if we had a test to determine if the baby is gay then we should definitely euthanize it. No one should have to live in a pain that's been medically defined as worse than cancer.

Come on man, why would a baby choose to be gay?

Slippery slope and all that, but if I knew I had a severely-learning-disabled (or anything worse) kid and I could legally wipe that sucker off the face of the Earth and try again, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

[Insert "you won't think that way once you actually have children" response here]

Have you seen shows where children that were given 8 months to live lived for upwards to 10 years and had what most would consider wonderful lives even considering their diseases? So, if you child has cancer you're just going to write them off and not let them fight? Fuck that. You as a parent have an obligation to fight for your child and their life. You don't just fucking off your kid because they have a disease. "Oh this one is fucked up, kill it and try again."
