Ooh this thread is making me sad. I remember playing on my NES. I remember Sega Genesis. I remember getting a Nintendo 64 and playing Mario 64 on it. I remember my dad watching and us having a great time on Christmas morning.

I was so happy when I got all the stars and met up with Yoshi. Shit was so amazing. I was 8 years old. 'Twas so fucking great.
Time to build a time machine?
Will you come with me on this journey through the perilous sea of time?
I remember being allowed to play the Colecovision in my parent's bedroom, they loved Zaxxon but I couldn't understand how to play. Spent so much time playing Donkey Kong. I remember sneaking downstairs in the middle of the night to find my parents playing Mario "testing out" my sisters birthday present -- and letting me play! I also remember my neighbours had Pitfall on their PC and everyone wanted my sister to show them how good she was at playing, even though I was better at video games, I ended up hiding behind a chalkboard and threw a fit!
I also remember being let down with Mario Kart 64, I still think the SNES version was way better.
Many fist fights with my brother were started over Mario Kart because he would go on streaks of getting the red shells, I would accuse him of somehow cheating, etc.
Mario Kart 64 was a minor disappointment, I agree. On most levels you don't feel like you're going very fast.
Mario Kart SNES you actually felt some sort of speed. Also, it seems the GameFAQs community hasn't noticed this yet (I just went over to check some FAQs), but the most of them that claim Toad/Koopa to be the best are clearly blind. The top 2 racers, speed wise, is KKK or Donkey Kong. This is evident in time trial (Rainbow Road especially, but that's the one I played most), once these 2 guys gets going, providing nothing stops them, they pull ahead massively. Hard to control, somewhat, you basically have to do very impressive power slides in advance.
Then Double Dash (I think, the Gamecube one) came about. In the UK/Pal version, there was a PAL (50hz) and NTSC (60hz) setting. My wimpy friends can't handle 60 when I suggested using that (the overall feel of the game would be faster). The PAL/NTSC thing was to support the shit/weird TVs we got over here. As my friends all had good TVs, 60hz was actually supported, but they all chose 50hz as they had no idea what they were doing. As I suggested doing 60hz, they couldn't play the game ... "too fast" for them (absolute bullshit)
Also, there needs to be a next generation F-Zero. F-Zero GX was a fantastic game. I hate the shitty Wipeout fanboys who claim Wipeout to be "faster". I played Wipeout (the recent ones except Vita) and lost interest extremely fast. You don't feel like you're going very fast at all, and weapons. I hate "serious" racing games with weapons/power ups. F-Zero was fun in a sense that your life meter was also your boost meter. And there was no weapons except slamming your racer into someone else's (fair game) at the risk of you flying off the track.
Ask a Wipeout player to try (60hz) Chapter 7 F-Zero GX and I gaurantee they'll never beat it. Or watch a video of a snaking player in Chapter 4 and/or other courses. Wipeout will never achieve such a sense of speed.
Calling mariokart 64 a disappointment in any way is borderline blasphemy.
Blame manako! He started it!![]()
lol... was more a point to me being old and set in my ways! I wasn't a fan of Nintendo's transition from 2D to 3D back then, I also spent waay to much time learning the old tracks. I found the N64 version to be gimmicky, I didn't like the tracks that had all the cars on the road etc.. and that unlike the original there weren't as many of the same types of levels.
Mario Kart 64 introduced the rubber band AI to the series. For that alone it is tainted.
However, the multiplayer showed that 2 players alone no longer was sufficient. Also, Moo Moo farm. Mario Kart on Hyper speed was awesome, and they need to make it an option for the next console release.
Anybody remember Sliders? Good times.
I remember Sliders.
Also, in the N64 generation at least, Episode 1 Pod Racing gave the best feeling of speed along side Extreme-G. Those games were fun as hell.
It wasn't as good as the original but really all of the Karts i've played for far have been letdowns compared to the first two. I cant say if the latest one is finally as good as it ought to be.
