Other UC series worth looking into are 0080, 08th MS Team, and the new Unicorn series. Gundam 00 was also pretty good I heard.

Nothing wrong with One Piece, but it's not Code Geass like.

If you really don't mind the mecha theme, Gundam 00 is right up your alley with the entire political struggles and intricate drama. More so the first season than the second. Alot of the series will definitely move you like Code Geass does.

Lost+Brain is almost literally a Death Note knockoff since you like that series. Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood, also breaks down into a political theme as well, though with more shounen like fights. Ghost in the Shell, also a good anime.

Code Geass is a masterpiece, you'd be surprised how many times this question has come up over the years. Hard to live up to it.

I dunno how many times I've typed this stock criticism for code geass, but here goes my qualm against it

It ruins a climactic cliffhanger by resetting the series into square one with the beginning of R2
Fucking Rolo and Suzakick pretty much just the fucking deus ex machina everything, which really ruins the whole concept of well planned strategy.
I wasn't a big fan of how everything can go into normal school days again after what had happened, but I guess this part is just a personal preference.
Marianne and Charles' arc was such a fucking waste of overshadowing on S1 and potential final villain, the series was just on full retard when Lelouch faced Charles on Akasha
In fact, most introduced character on S2 was such a fucking waste of character slot in general:
ie: Shinku pretend to be useful for a few episode, than just become Lelouch's/Schneizel's bitch from that point onward
That bitch with pierced eye was foreshadowed as such a badass, then again turned just be a little bitch against Suzaku anyway, but then again, the entire KotR was such a fucking disappointment considering they were barely beyond mooks and just fucking die like bitches to Karen/Suzaku...
What the fuck is up with Anya's backstory? shit was so random and wasn't even explored.

I'm sure I can bitch about so much more, there was basically almost nothing I could consider redeemable from the second season, and I fucking loved the first season, which made the entire second season such a goddamn frustrating to watch, especially since I was following weekly livestream for it hoping it would get better.

Hell, ever thought about why season 2 was named R2? Considering all the naming scheme of the immortal of the series, and lelouch's romanized katakana initial, the series already seemed like a cop out on what it probably aimed for, but that's just my take on it.

It's actually really amazing for a tactical warfare perspective. It gives you an idea about guerilla warfare with MS and how they would be used in real deployment vs having one giant army fight another in space. You also see how tanks/planes/people have to fight against an MS, and how they can all still be useful regardless of the fact that the MS is the giant elephant in the room.

Also the fight against the Gouf is the first fight where you really see how a pilot's experience level is relevant and what a good pilot will actually do in order to beat newbies. Usually when an Ace falls in UC, it's cuz some Newtype out-talents them (ANYONE Amuro and Camille ever fight basically)

No, but given what he asked for, I strongly disagree with the recommendation of Wing. All the "political intrigue" of Wing is just a rehash of UC elements.

Zechs being the lost son of an enemy family to the rebel army? Based on Char. Zech's mask? Stolen from Char. Zechs having a sister? Based on Char. War for space independence? Stolen from Original Gundam. The heroes switching sides midway through? Stolen from Zeta. The villain going full crazy at the end and dropping something big on Earth at the end as part of the villain's plot? Stolen from Char's Counterattack. The very idea of a colony drop? Stolen from Original Gundam.

I mean obviously they are related serieses and they are allowed to poach ideas, but the argument I am making is that it is far more satisfying to see the original serieses. They are classics for a reason.

08th MS was awesome if you were a big fan of the early UC battles dealing with The One Year War. You know, a time when Gundam wasn't an instantly invincible killing machine. I enjoyed it since it was a nice side story to the events of Mobile Suit Gundam and covered what was going on planet-side once the Gundam type was mass produced.

I didn't mind Shiro's progression, either. Most series are the whole 'coming of age' backstory using the pilot (Amuro, Kamille, Setsuna, Judau, Banagher, etc) where we go from whiney bitch to seasoned veteran over a series span. 08th was pretty much, "Here's war, there's some love story. Let's see some fighting, a bit of politics, corrupt leaders and a splash of THIS IS NO ZAKU, BOY". Then again, I've always preferred UC to other timelines so that may be why I'm fairly biased. Fucking loved Zeta more than most series.
