Most people though who opt to get speed kings like that aren't that responsible on the road. There's a reason why super sport riders generally have a bad rep.

I don't think there's anything wrong to go with a big bike for your first, but it's just recommended to start smaller. I remember some douche coming with his buddies 'Busa for his road test. Lest to say, he was the only one to not pass.

It isn't the speed I'm worried about with starting off, after this thread, I want to keep it cheap. I have resraint, but Even with all the restraint in the world, I don't want to buy a $10,000 bike only to lay that bitch down, and that seems inevitable from what you guys are saying. Got some insurance quotes on some ninja 250s and 500s. I guess I'll just start looking now. If i decide I want something bigger, I'll get it next spring.

That's funny, the exact same thing happened to me. Except no one passed the test except for me (at least of those that went before me). I was confused as to why someone would bring a gunship to a speed boat contest.

Yeah you'll be happy with that. I have never had to lay a bike down or even scratched any of my bikes. I had a close call one time but it was my own fault. My first bike was a 600, and for where I ride there is no reason to need bigger than a 600 or 750. Have fun on what you get, learn, wear a helmet, get a jacket, and maybe take a safety course. You will never regret any of those things. Then like you said, next year (not spring, winter, do not buy in the spring) get something a little bigger like a 600 or 750 if you feel the need, but that 500 will last you.

Awareness is king, and second to that is safety equipment and proper clothing. Be smart and your bike won't touch the ground and you won't end up in the hospital. Guy I know in the fire department here got fucked on a bike once with his girl on the back. She had a few breaks, he was in a coma for 13 days and lost a few internals. Accidents are always worse on a bike, someone stopping short can cost you a lot more than a deductible. As long as you follow your brain and not your dick on a bike you'll love it.

Gloves too. I couldn't ever ride comfortably without my gloves. Just felt... off.

I rarely wear gloves, but I keep them with me just incase I hit rain.

Bugs and the occasional rock made gloves worth it. Plus if you take a spill gloves will really save your hands since most people stick there hands out when they fall.

I've got pretty poor circulation to my extremities like my hands and feet so gloves and boots are something I always wear when on the bike.

Picking up my Gladius on Friday after it's safetied, lowering link is installed and tuned up. It's the 2009 maroon/white version, ~2200miles on it, and with my EX500 trade in, $2550 before taxes. My budget was $3800 so with the money saved going to spend it on little changes. Most will go towards painting it though. Going for a black/white theme, like the 2012 models.

I've never had a problem with rocks or bugs. Everything hits my helmet and chest I guess due to aerodynamics, cause things definitely hit my head and chest. A june bug at 50+ is like a bullet.

I remember when a big fly hit my visor. It sounded like it cracked it on impact. Scared me shitless back then lol.

Most I've had are some small bugs at about 35. It sounded kinda like a tap before bouncing off my visor.

Rock on interstate at 70 or 75. That shit hurt. Bugs at 50 a few times. Misc. shit in the 30's. Always fun lol.

I got hit by a rock a little smaller than a golf ball that fell off a log truck trailer. It felt like it lodged in my helmet and scared the hell out of me. I don't think I have ever come to a stop on my bike so fast. If it had hit my visor, I don't think it would have stopped there. When I took my helmet off, there was nothing but a paint scrape down the side. That was when I learned to stay the hell away from anything like concrete trucks, dump trucks, log trucks, garbage trucks, or any other vehicle that may drop large objects.

Anything bigger than 0.1 cm2 is large and fucking bugs definitely feel like rocks. Lately, even if I am riding slow and its very hot, I tend to go with the visor... if you have had one of those fuckers get in your eye you know what is having a bad time. As someone else said, even rain does hurt if you are not covered.

Edit: Also, +1 to gloves. I am the first one to think its kind of a pain to carry/wear them even for really short rides, but if you hit the ground, hands are going to get fucked up. Even some light gloves can make a difference... and anyway, if you are going to wear it at times, why not wear them always and be 100% used to them.

Kinda concerned for my friends. They got some piece of shit $25 gloves that only have rubber padding on the fingers and are crappier than the gloves I play paintball in. I showed them mine that have a hard plate on the knuckles as a comparison but it's like talking to a table.

Lol, I can only imagine. Remember riding roller coasters in the rain (Nitro, if you've heard of it), it's like daggers into your eyes and skin. Can only imagine dealing with that and trying to control a vehicle at the same time lol.

$25 for gloves that aren't designed for motorcycling is dumb. I used these and they are not much more than what your friend bought, and they worked great against objects hitting my hands while riding and during a spill:

Double post but since I got to talking about gear, invest some time in searching for a helmet and go someplace where you can try them on ( you can always order it online later for less money) so you get the best fitting helmet for you. Look at ratings too, most places don't sell below a DOT ratings since its the minimum, but look for the Snell rating on it too. I can attest to the quality of Scorpion brand helmets, they are comfortable and not expensive and they actually work and well I may add, didn't feel the impact at all through the helmet.

New helmet should be a little snug. Not a lot but not to the point where you can shake your head and it moves.
