I'm from Arizona and it's worse than you guys think. You don't see the stuff that DOESN'T pass the legislature house. Neo's in law school and one of his good friends is a clerk for the legislature. He says that every single day there is a new bat shit insane bill that horrifies the senses, and the one's we're seeing are only the really really mild ones.

So far he's mentioned: Book burning legislation (similar to the "we don't want our children hearing liberal ideas), Guns on campuses (to make them more safe..), Private businesses being allowed to fire women that use contraception (not just for religious reasons), and much much more. The Republicans in charge are working VERY hard to pump out as much insane legislature as they can before they lose power. Luckily not all of it is passing, but it's incredibly scary.

Oh and I forgot they voted to re-imburse one of their republican friends that LOST a run-off, for all his campaign funds (over 200k).

my favorite part about legislation like this is the high cost to society in the end. people seem to think that we can just abandon the poor and impoverished and they'll cease being a problem, but that's not how it works. without social programs like planned parenthood (among others) we see higher crime rates, higher insurance premiums, and a general higher cost to society overall. how much does it cost society to pay for breast cancer screening vs. treating? how much does birth control cost vs. welfare, schooling, food stamps, foster care etc. for an unwanted child? oh, you don't want to provide those programs, just let the kid survive on his own? ok, the question changes to "how much do you think his eventual criminal behavior and incarceration will cost society?" there is always a cost. programs like planned parenthood are just as much about reducing that cost to the bare minimum as they are about humanitarian efforts.

if you want to be a selfish dick, fine. be a selfish dick. it's your right. but at least have the sense to realize that after a certain point your selfishness will fold in upon itself and end up costing you in the long run. be a smart selfish dick.
