    PS3 issues

I have a gen 1 PS3 and when I went to turn it on today it seems to not output any signal anymore. It was working fine up until just now apparently, since I just finished tales of graces on it.

I don't really know how to go about diagnosing / solving the problem. It hasn't been under warranty for a long time and I could get a new one if needed, but I'll lose all my saves and that would really suck.

Is there a way to self-diagnose the problem and possibly fix it, or a way to send it off / bring it somewhere to be fixed without losing the save data?

bummer, my launch ps3 took a shit on me last week. you're not getting red flashing light or YLOD? just no output? did you try both HDMI and the RCA connections? you can hold down the eject button and power button while you hold it on to enter a bare minimum video state like for instance if your ps3 is set to output 1080p but you're connected to a 720p max TV

Output switch did nothing. :\ I don't have my rca cables anymore unfortunately that would be a good thing to try.

If you're forced to pick up a new PS3, you can easily salvage your save files by just whipping out the HDD, plugging it into the new unit, and copying the files onto a USB stick. Some games have a copy protect though, you can upload those to the PSN+ cloud if you have it. It's an annoying process but it's relatively simple.

No you can't, the entire hdd is encrypted.

Is that a new thing ? I upgraded my 40gb HDD to a 500gb HDD a couple years ago and it worked just fine. I used the same PS3 to copy pasta all my saves if that makes a difference.

Edit: Before that I had to reformat the old HDD a couple times and that worked too.

Edit 2: I poked about online, you're right, the save files will only work on the PS3 that made them, which itself has never been a problem for me, my base PS3 still works just fine. Would the PSN+ cloud still work though ? Not that I'd recommend paying a sub just to do that unless it was important.

No, it has always been the case. If you want to use a new hdd in a ps3, you need to format it. There is a way around this with cfw, but you'd need information from the original ps3 that you can't get once it's dead.

You can copy the saves over, assuming they aren't protected, but without the ps3 to decrypt the hdd, there's no way to access them, unless you already backed them up.

try unplugging all video cords, holding the power button down with the system off, keep holding it till it beeps a few seconds later, then beeps again and turns off a few seconds later. then plug your hdmi cable back in and restart the system

I actually never had this problem swapping from 40GB to 500GB with my old fat, the day it arrived I pop'd the old one out and stuck the new one in and off I went, it formatted itself inside the PS3 and then installed the firmware and off I went.

This all being about a week after I got my PS3 and didn't really care about the save files because the games I had, I was hardly anywhere in, and there were no trophies at the time.

Mine did the same thing, happened on Tuesday. It was acting like it was in the way out for awhile, lots of lag/frame drops on single-player hanged.

Having Caiti bring over the video cables in like 20 minutes. If that doesn't try it I'll try the trick above. I really just didn't wanna lose the FFXIII save since I'm about to start FFXIII-2. I'll play graces again, idgaf, gives me a chance to get ultimate weapons on first playthrough now that I know what's up, lol.

Do you leave the switch on the back on? I left it on for like a week once (just the red light glows) and when I tried to play it would just not respond even though I was watching movies on it a bit earlier in the day. I switched the back button off and unplugged it for a few days and it worked again after I gave it another shot.

Should I bother doing that for a 1st Gen 20GB PS3? I ask because the upgrade is space is obviously good. I've heard the slim only has two ports, but I don't have many friends anyways. Other than that, I haven't updated my PS3 for ~2yrs so I've heard I may benefit from non-official stuff.
