Obama: Same-Sex Marriage Should Be Legal

In an exclusive interview with ABC News, President Obama said that same-sex marriage should be legal, per Yahoo News’ Rick Klein:

In an interview with ABC News’ Robin Roberts, the president described his thought process as an “evolution” that led him to this place, based on conversations with his own staff members, openly gay and lesbian service members, and conversations with his wife and own daughters.

“I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts, in an interview to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America” Thursday. Excerpts of the interview will air tonight on ABC’s “World News with Diane Sawyer.”

Obama Announcement Is Cold Comfort to LGBT Americans

(Washington, DC) – Log Cabin Republicans respond to President Barack Obama’s latest evolution on the freedom to marry.

“That the president has chosen today, when LGBT Americans are mourning the passage of Amendment One, to finally speak up for marriage equality is offensive and callous,” said R. Blacks overwhelmingly do not support same sex marriage. Archi pointed out yesterday that the NC vote passed heavily in predominately black counties. Obama cannot lose the black vote. There's no way this is politically motivated.

They speak out against same-sex marriage prohibitions every time. Yeah it's a little weird that they are Republicans but let's face it Democrats weren't really doing much for the gays in the last fifty years, either.

Perhaps because being non-religious and pro-gay is akin to political suicide. You saw how quickly Obama had to merge himself with Christianity just to have a shot at the Presidential Championship Belt the first time around. He's probably the first president or candidate with any sort of clout that's actually had the balls to come out and support gays. Obviously he's not going to suddenly detach himself from Christianity, or he'd have something of around a 2% vote, but its still history in the making.

If blacks do anything, they simply won't vote. They're still ultra-religious, and that means supporting the same text that essentially allowed them to become slaves for over a century. Foolish is as foolish does, or follows, in this instance.

This may be because I think back to Jamaica when I hear the "Majority of African Americans oppose gay marriage" rhetoric, but I don't think it's that salient of an issue among African Americans in America.

I'm black. My family is black. My family mostly lives in Baltimore, though we're in the glorious master race suburbs. My family is mostly religious. My father is strictly anti-gay, because the bible says so, and he is obsessed. My mother is a logical thinker, but still follows the bible, though nowhere near as strictly. Their church is strictly anti-gay, as is much of the surrounding black community.

It is a salient issue among any black in the U.S. that identifies as christian, especially those that identify themselves as Southern Baptist or Methodist. Its going to be very interesting to see the effect, though I still feel that Obama is a generation too early to be doing this. Old people need to die before a pro-gay president can be elected, IMO. There are far too many old, devout Christians that somehow follow that an ancient text that says no to gays but yes to murder, stoning, and slavery. Somehow they're allowed to cherry-pick past the creepy passages in the bible, yet can lock in on an anti-gay stance, because they're the majority and that's "always the way its been".

The word of God is unchanging, until people decide that some stuff "wasn't meant for modern times, so we can ignore it".

I love that the bible, which got one of the most fundamental moral issues (slavery) WRONG, is still held up as the compass to guide humanity.

Still trying to figure out how you can cherry-pick and gloss over 80% of the tenants of the Bible, all mandated by God, whose voice and word is eternal, yet can choose to hone on the remaining 20%, and continue to persecute and keep down individuals for generation upon generation.
