Kotoura-san School Romantic Comedy Manga Gets TV Anime

The manga creator Enogizu announced on Tuesday that an television anime adaptation of his four-panel online romantic comedy manga Kotoura-san has been green-lit. The school fantasy story follows Haruka Kotoura, a girl who just transfered to a new school. Kotoura happens to be able to read people's minds.

Masahiko Ohta (Minami-ke, Mitsudomoe, Yuruyuri) is directing the anime at the studio AIC Classic. Takashi Aoshima (Minami-ke, Mitsudomoe, Yuruyuri) is in charge of the series scripts, while Takaharu Okuma (Mitsudomoe, Hanaukyo Maid-tai) is serving as the character designer and chief animation director.

In other news, Silver Link is fucked, Kokoro Connect might get canceled and Prisma Ilya might get offloaded to another studio.

Here's the lowdown.

The brilliant minds at the production staff of Kokoro Connect decided to do a prank for the director's cut edition of the DVD boxset, and called up a b-list voice actor, Mitsuhiro Ichiki to audition for a "starring role" in their show, they told him he was a "perfect fit"

Needless to say he was floored. He spoke to them on the phonecall (that was taped and played back afterwards publicly for his humiliation) that he was throwing a celebration, taking his mother out to eat, among other things.

He showed up, they did an audition, he held a few radio interviews (all bogus), and they ended it all by telling him that the entire thing was staged, that he wasn't good enough for their show, and that if he wanted, he could have a job "as a janitor, or to clean the toilets or something" in front of a live audience. They then proceeded to make fun of him on a radio show afterwards where the VAs for Aoki (Takumi Terushima) and Yui (Hisako Kanemoto) made fun of his career and called him a worthless actor/person among other things.

Fast forward to the present time, Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki, Kyon, etc) has a talk radio show, and the guy, who's good friends with Sugita came on and explained what happened. Needless to say Sugita was pissed. That started the firestorm that's going on now. Silver Link is getting shelled.

Hopefully they crash and burn. They crushed this guy's dreams in front of him and then laughed at him for it. Reprehensible.

Wow. I know Japan likes that sort of prank-type humor but I've never heard of anything like that before. It's just not kosher to defame someone publically like that no matter what country you're in, but I thought especially Japan. I too really hope they get fucked for doing that.

Tymon you should give them your synopsis of the issue. Everything I see, that describes this issue is horribly written.

This will probably end the career of Hisako Kanemoto (Ika Musume, Asteria from Rin-ne, Mael Strom from Korewa Zombie).

Kotaku's article is nonsense. Though I suppose it falls under reporting guidelines: talk about the borderline facts and disregard everything else.

The reality is that they laughed at him and he broke down and then they laughed at him for breaking down.

Then they were quoted later as saying "seeing a person crumble like that is so beautiful" (Aoki's VA said this)

The video footage is the judge, jury, and executioner here. They're done.

Oh, by the way, he allegedly (according to his statements on his blog) rejected a job offer and didn't go to EVO2012, where he was going to interview and play SSFIVAE in favor of this.

And he was tazed. Not sure about the details on this one. Something about it being a popular talk show prank. Kanemoto tazed him, though. It was after the big reveal. He got shocked pretty hard.

If you can read and understand Japanese, you can hear how they laugh about the whole event. I guess Kanemoto didn't see his reaction when told the news at the start of it. You can see all the comments flying by saying that they should die and that their careers are over. Then at 2.5 minutes or so, they get into the promotional vehicle for Kokoro Connect after the 1.5 video. Ichiki is wired to some type of shock device that Kanemoto has the controller to and shocks him like 8 times at random while he tries to read the upcoming promotional events that are happening. Kanemoto asks him (@3:18), "were you sad to not get a part?" He responds, "You saw it?", she responds with one of his lines that were flipped around on him during the earlier script reading.

@4:08 it goes to Sugita's (Kyon from Haruhi) radio show. Sugita asks him that there is a question about some type of candid camera thing that happened earlier and Ichiki explains that he thought he was going to be voicing an original character but he wasn't, and he was going to be a "Senden buchou", PR Director(?). @5:16, you can hear how Sugita does the typical Japanese suck in sound and then "asou". @5:39, Sugita is like "Ichiki is too nice and if it happened to me, I wouldn't take that kind of crap. Not everyone can take a joke like that". Conversation is how about Ichiki's manager was in on it as well and they talk about seeing a man's reaction to a boob popping out is a funny candid moment, but not this (or something like that).

For like the next 8 minutes he discusses it lightly on a radio show but at 15:00 he explains that everyone was in on it including his manager and that the original character's name was Mitsuki Hiro, (or a play on his name of Ichiki with "hero" as the first name).
