Which if that's the case, I suppose I could see a few angles presuming Kirito still stays in the VR.
1) Upon defeating the Administrator, the world glitches out and they need to fix shit.
2) They defeat the Administrator, but Cardinal turns out to be the true Big Bad(tm) and they all get banished to the Dark Territory.
3) They win, but then the invasion from the DT begins. With the knights largely incapacitated, the world is fucked.
4) The final conflict winds up interrupted by the program reaching whatever conclusion it desired and begins the process of deleting everything. Bad guys are now allies as they try to stop it.
None of these outcomes I find particularly endearing and does nothing to immediately curb my concern of mediocre conflicts. I suspect for a lot of people, the Gloameyes fight from S1 was probably the best the series has put out. We might not think whipping out dual swords to be something interesting since we've all played XI and various other games, but somehow they managed to push the reveal in a cool way. Comparing that to, say, them unlocking their swords in this arc, they've felt way to similar to Bleach characters (Kirito = Ichimaru, Eugeo = Rukia, Alice = Byakuya) and their zanpakuto releases, only without the real benefit of that's world building toward it all since all Kirito and Eugeo did was meet someone and got a hax powerup with no training toward that specific end. Idiot clown was basically one-shot. Sword Golem was one-shot by Cardinal after everyone else got 1HKO'd by it. Eugeo and Bercouli was pretty short. Against Fanatio was probably the most decent of the lot. Stuff before that has also largely been one-shots or ended soon after.
From the game perspective, that's also been largely absent from the combat presentation. We just have to accept older people have less HP, but we also never really see HP bars to affirm a differing decline. Their interpretation of MP has also been relatively nebulous, with "running low" feeling more like a matter of plot convenience than mechanical practicality. Anyway, I'm probably just being anal about all this, but either there's a lot that's been cut for budget/time or the source was dropping the ball, too.
