I got hired once for an IT job purely because I was female. It was pretty discouraging (they didn't tell me for a while; after they told me I worked there for a couple more months then quit); I certainly didn't feel valued for what I could do (which was way more than they wanted me to for the job).

The whole US electoral system needs reform, and really badly. You're stuck in an increasingly partisan system that has little basis in the reality of peoples' needs.
