I don't recall him being crazy in chinatown, just an amazing character

if you want crazy Jack Nicholson, it's Cuckoo's Next and the Shining with 2 different but also amazing kinds of crazy

For the type of movie Chinatown is, Nicholson had this really subdued crazy aura to him (for as crazy as a 1974 Noir film by Roman Polanski would allow.) You also gotta love that monotone voice he has for like a good half of the movie.
