And this is bullshit, but so is going to class on exam day and not finding a goddamn seat because the number of people taking the class suddenly doubled overnight.

Reviews work. Everyone dropped a professor's classes two semesters in a row at my younger brother's school. He stopped being a dick after that.
My school was a 25 minute drive from my mother's but it would take about 2.5 hours due to traffic. I was late for my first class often, by a few minutes and he would always be a dick about it. Got to the point that if I was two minutes late I would rather skip the class than d al with his shit. I eventually dropped the class. I am wasted money that semester.
I think it is fucking retarded to have me pay for something and then put arbitrary stipulations like to that on it. Shit happens. 5 mins late to class is not really something anyone should hold against a student. 15/30 sure. No excuse to be a fucking dick. Pay attention to your students, pull them to the side and talk to them like adults. Positive reinforcement works better than punishment or shaming.

Reviews work, internal reviews work. Ratemyprofessor? It's just a whinge party that is rarely taken notice of by anyone who knows anything. If you think your lecturer sucks, write it in the end of semester review form or take it up with the degree program leader/dean/whatever. Especially if it's a compulsory module for your degree program, cos it's more than likely it'll be taken by the same person next year and dropping out of it will just hurt you.

As for latecomers, I have no problem with most latecomers - it's those who show up 10 mins before the end of an hour tutorial just to sign off on the register that I have an issue with. It is pretty distracting though, for the lecturer and the other students.

As for attendance policies - even if there isn't a strict one most lecturers will have an internal one anyway (well, tutors, probably, since the classes are usually smaller). If I get to an essay and I have no idea who you are, because you've never attended a tutorial or signed off on a register, I'm going to probably be paying more attention to your work and expecting it to be pretty crap. If you're that guy who is awesome and writes an amazing essay or whatever, then I'm fine, but if you're shit and you're not showing up to things you'll probably get a far lower mark than if you were the same level of shit and showing up to things. Participation matters, even if you just get yourself known with the lecturer (for something good), seeing a name they recognise will make them vaguely more favourable to your work.

I had classes that would drop your grade a letter if you missed more than 2-3 classes or were late an equivalent number of times, and failed past 4-5 absences. My gf's school drops a grade past two absences and a letter for each one afterward, and I think expels you for more than two Fs. It's serious shit.

My uni was like that (Sydney Uni), but my current uni's modules have a participation mark worth 10%, and it's up to the lecturer to decide how to deal with it (pretty much). So you won't fail by not showing up but it's a 10% drop if you couldn't be arsed.

IMO participation/attendance marks are a bit dumb in something like maths, but in an ethics course, where a lot of the point of it is discussion and debate and talking about ideas, it totally makes sense.
