I sucked at money in FFXI. But I did put a shitload into clothcrafting (got to like 96? something like that) and used to take advantage of the updates with new crafting recipes to make a quick buck by crafting up loads of materials for the new recipes. Silent oils on my alchemy were excellent moneymakers too, but I never really had super uber gear. Story of my life, really, lol

I also ran some shady ass mother fucking KSNM 30 Scorp Manaburn with 3 black mages and we only let people pick one thing out of the loot pool and generally ran like 100 instances a weekend.

I farmed this dude so much, id start to dream that i saw Dune Widow in a wide scan list. this was around the time that inflation got really really bad and spider webs were selling for a ton of gil, so much that i didn't even need the torque drop

I didn't have a special money making method, just played the AH and got lucky a lot.
People also seemed to love to give me stolen items.

Was handed at least 4 different stolen enhancing swords when those were money makers. Didn't get to sell one of them and a GM ended up involved but still that was somewhere around 30m for the other 3 alone.
Also got fairly lucky with peacock charms.

Basically, if I were unlucky I'd have been broke as a joke 'cause I spent very VERY little time trying to make money.
