As much as I want to believe... I have been burned before with the "just wait til retail" response in regards to this game. So, how do you know?
Do you want to look for a buffer/debuffer every time you do something in a party? One of the things that made XI so wonderful (preTAU) was that there was a place for a buffer or a debuffer in a party.
Either the game becomes too easy with a de/buffer, one is necessary in a party to pass content (4 roles total...) or the role is useless. None of these options sound good.
Too bad they seem to be making smn into a debuffer. We'll see how that'll work. RDM all over again?
Eh. We'll see.
XI's RDM was a really stupid concept for a class, they'd do well to not bring it back.
1 Healer is fine, at least for now. It lets all the healers be the same, which makes finding them easier which makes getting them in your group easier which makes training them easier etc. We'll see if they didn't completely break Warrior in Phase 3. Who knows, maybe we'll have 1 tank.
They just need to realize that every job needs to be able to deal or heal enough damage to warrant it's presence in any given situation with buffs/debuffs/[other unique mechanic like pets] being secondary.
Near the end of 1.0 they actually managed to strike a decent balance between WAR and PLD tanking after PLD being useless for most of the game, they best not be going backwards.
How they plan to deal with WHM's monopoly on healing in the future is the big question, I don't like 1 job being the only viable healer any more than I like 1 job being the only viable tank.
I did, but I left the game when it was clear it was a shell of what could be.
I will be honest. I am completely ok with not having a trinity and having a square. We really had 4 major archetype's in XI and it worked more often than when it didnt. Tank, Healer, DD, and de/buffer worked in XI. Did you always need a de/buffer? No, but it made content more efficient when you did.
I don't share a lot of the RDM disdain. I had one and loved most of it. RDM was just another case of XI not thinking things completely through and the playerbase deciding they were going to do something completely different than what was intended. Ninja and Paladin were the two other main examples of this. Although Warrior was also a misguided job in XI for quite a while.
I would hope that they learned enough of what was the wrong thing to do with SMN (and pet classes in general) with 10 years of experience in XI to not make the same mistakes with SMN again.
Hopefully as Niiro said, they will have the sense to understand that pet's have to be a secondary mechanic that can not make up personal damage or healing. Years of trying to balance DRG with their wyvern in XI should have proven that much to SE (I hope).
Actually, for a lot of stuff pre-cap increase, you needed a de/buffer or you couldn't do content (or at least do it reasonably).
Khimaira without slow and marches, fucking lol.
So no, I'd rather not see a useless job.
I'd also rather see the real trinity as opposed to just 2/3s of it.
I wouldn't consider something like Khimaira as "base content" though. You could do most leveling content without the need of a de/buffer. Yes, most of "end-game" required you to have one. But a lot of the other "base" content was "easier" or "more efficient" with a de/buffer but not required.
2/3rds of it? How does the game currently only have 2/3rds? We have apparently 2 tanks and 1 healer and a ton of different DD. I'd personally have liked to see them give us another healer. Although looking back at XI we really didn't have a second class that was designed as a pure healer til we got Scholar. We just had Red Mage that was "also healing" and Summoner who was "relegated to healing" both because of lackluster job design. Neither was designed to be a healer, the playerbase chose to make them both into healers for a long time.
I can't really comment on if Warrior was designed to tank in 1.0. Like I said, I didn't play long enough to experience this. All I do know is that White Mage/Conjurer is it in terms of a true healing job/class in the game. Even if Arcanist proves to be the Healer/de/buffer hybrid are we going to be stuck with 1 healer for a while? I never got to play bard, but are they the subhealers they could be in XI?
Healer Tank DPS is not the trinity
Then define the trinity for those of us who have obviously been misinformed.
Don't pay his superiority complex any attention.
Crowd Control, do you guys even MMO? LOL
1.23 had CC for every class. This was good, 2.0 is looking like it will not. This is bad.
The best crowd control, is the one where you kill it, before it gets out of control.
I don't recall a lot of content that utilized CC in 1.0. There were the groups of enemies you'd Sleepga to skip in dungeons, but besides that? I can't think of any.
And when CC was used, it was pretty much always Sleepga... which in 1.0 was a Lv45 BLM spell. Specifically, which CC did classes have in 1.0 that it's looking like we won't have in 2.0? Shadowbind is still there. Stuns for LNC and GLA are still there. Repose is still there.
Wat?
The best cc in 1.0 was Sleepga followed by synchronized Flare x5.
