Fishing returning?

1.0 Fisherman here. I've been away a while. I saw a few mixed messages about the possibility of fishing not returning as a legitimate gathering option anymore. When I didn't see it in the recent beta, I was concerned. Any word on that?

It will be coming back, I'm pretty sure it will be in beta Phase 4 (open beta). But... Yoshi-P has been talking about it being less of a tradeskill, moneymaking type activity and much more of a leisure activity, where you try to catch the biggest fish you can for seemingly no reason other than bragging rights. This strangely similar to real-life fishing take on what was once a decent gathering profession has me scratching my head, hopefully it will still have importance to the economy or I foresee a lot of complaining, especially from 1.0 players.

It's exactly because of economic impact (bots) that its being converted to more of a leisure activity. Sure, you could try to add layers of access restrictions like needing to level to 10 first, limited/required bait, finding a school of fish, fatigue systems, and so on, but there's also a point when trying to beat bots, you utterly castrate legit players.

How do I get my retainer after I finished the story mission giving me one?

Fishing not making gil automatically makes it boring and not fun for me, I only like fishing if I'm making infinite money while doing it, it's what makes it fun for me.

Go to the counter for retainers, and ask for one. It probably told you where to go in the quest text, but in case you skipped over that, it's located in the area where there's a bunch of NPC shops in both Gridania and Limsa. I assume the same applies to Ul'dah, but I never checked. It doesn't matter which city you get your retainer(s) in.

Go to the place where Minfilia/Y'shtola/story_NPCs hang out; that building in the place West of Horizon... the name is escaping me. Pop open your map, and head to the northernmost room; the quest to enter Halatali is there.

Thanks for the update on fishing. That makes me sad, but whatever keeps the economy stable, better than perversing fishing.

I bet there will be some eventual benefits to fishing outside of simply completing a checklist. 'Inside the Belly' was just so enjoyable.

The Conjurer NPC is Wihtred in Hyrstmill (North Shroud).

Just keep in mind that you have to first complete the quest that gives you access to the armor board in order to jump. Meaning you can't go from level 1 to 15 on a fresh character; that is unless they changed it from Phase 2.

There's also some sort of minimum story progression cockblock. If I had to guess, I'd say you probably have to have beaten Ifrit.

In Phase 2 it was that you needed to complete through the level 10 missions and have access to the armory system. I guess they may have changed it.

The Uldah mission? Go to the place with the giant toads. I forget the name and am at work so I cannot access the game. There should be a marker. When you get there, click the sparkly spot.
