It appears that gathering is the main source of shards. As I recall the only monsters which dropped shards/crystals were Sprites in Beta, and so gathering is the only way to get loads of them for crafting.

Likely.
It was different back the first time because the beta server names were after villains. The current beta server names are all very normal ones.

Anyone know if the XP boost for hitting L50 on your first is applied to ALL jobs/classes, or just the combat ones? (And will hitting 50 with Craft/Gather earn you it, or is it likely going to be a main quest line L50 finish reward, though that's a crazy wild assumption on my end.)

There had been zero mention of the buff until a couple days ago, so you know as much as we do.

Likely it'll only be for battle classes though.

Newegg has the PS3 version in stock as of now. But Newegg has hardly ever offered pre-order bonuses for games and I don't see any mention of pre-order early access/Mog Cap/Cait Sith in the item description so this may be no different. Alternatively, order the PS3 CE from Newegg, order non-CE from Amazon and wait for email with the early access code and then cancel Amazon pre-order.
