Weapons have different caps by which the class/job's main attributes can affect your auto-attack/weaponskill damage... I believe it's based on the DPS stat. (I think)
To put it simply
Auto Attack stat caps come from DMG rating
Weapon Skill stat caps come from DPS rating
Base damage and DPS determine stat caps for AA and WS damage respectively.
edit: apparently I left the window open too long.
We don't have an OF thread for XIV, and as much as I love to troll things...I just can't find a good place to start.

some crafting questions:
looking at this ffxiv pads guide http://xivpads.com/?-Guides&Guide:_H...all_the_things
a few things are unclear
what is the relationship between great success and control?
is there a way to increase the chance of great success (other than abilities)
is prismatic the same as rainbow
How is leveling supposed to occur in ARR?
(I have some interest for the new game, but I haven't followed what gameplay is going to be like in ARR.)
seriously?? this game better not turn into a "run around the area grabbing all the quests blowing through all of the uninteresting text" games. that would absolutely ruin this game. i'd rather do the boring leves
1) There should be no relationship between great success and control. I'm not even sure what gave you that impression. Control is for reducing the chances of instability and aetherial sparking.
2) The only way to increase change of great success is to increase your chances of success. This is done through stacking craftsmanship/m.craft. Each synth may only be affected by one craftsmanship type, but no one has concrete evidence on which one is good for which synths. All that said, neglecting control entirely in favor of these stats is also a bad idea. If your control is too low, your success rates will be lowered as well. How low is too low? It varies per recipe and no one has a magic number for any one synth.
3) Yes. Rainbow is generally easier to remember so that's what people call it, but prismatic is how the game refers to it ("prismatic glow").
While I'm not a huge fan of quest-based exping, I'm not sure how that is any less-fun than "boring leves" or grinding.
Actually, Yoshida said that the best way will be a mix of different content, but yeah, it is changing into a quest driven game in a huge part.
what gave me the idea was that the guide just wasnt clear, he talks about maximizing great success, and then lists his control gear without insight on why, so in my mind. they were connected.
as for the glow, when it happens to me, the game says something like... takes on all the colors of the rainbow.
the problem with those quest driven games is that... well... take WoW for example.. there are no cutscenes, but there is a ton of story. i found out though that the "story" was fragmented into a 1000 pieces into these quests, which i didnt read because when youre collecting 10 and 20 quests at a time, if you read 3 pages of "why i need you to bonk 10 rabbits on the head" youd never get anything done. also, when youre collecting 10-20 quests at a time, its extremely hard to follow the "story" when its mixed in with nonsense
Yeeeeah, FFXIV crafting has it's own little religious sects. Some swear by control, some think it's worthless. That Onion Lotion dude (Green_and_a_Half on the official forums) doesn't give enough 'why' behind his preferences, so I discount a lot of what he spouts off about. Due to that, we frequently butt heads in the crafting sections of the official forums when I call him out on his lack of supporting evidence.
Ah-hah! You are correct! That is why there are two names for it. The text that pops up while you are crafting says "colors of the rainbow", but the crafting action descriptions refer to it as "prismatic glow". These two things are the same.
Whatever lets you endlessly mash Careful until you're at 10 or less* Durability so you can finish it with progress advancement skills is the way to go.

Ah, that's right. It's been a while D:

wonder if an onion helm code would be worth more than $20 once 2.0 hits. i'm guessing no, but it could be a gamble.
